Fifth Clue - [Video] // Spaceprom, lawl

[He's been hearing an awful lot of people making dates for the dance on the network, and... well. Rookie decided he'd join in a bit.]

O'Brien. Want to talk to you.

[He's going to be subtle here for about twenty seconds, and then he's not.]

Got a date for the dance yet?

[ Hey it's not his fault by the time you and Emile and whoever else got there he'd already taken a look around. Okay yes it is his fault, he'd disobeyed direct orders to stay still until someone came to him but WHATEVER WHATEVER.

Also that was the last thing he was expecting Rookie to say. ]

...wait, wha?

[It's totally your fault, O'Brien, why you do dis?

... and that reaction is pretty much worth him asking, bwahahah.]

Asking if you have a date to the dance.

[JUST WAIT AND HE WILL BLOW YOUR MIND, BB]

Um.

Wasn't really, y'know, planning on going...

Not really my thing. Probably gonna be boring. You know. Dancing and shit.

[ In other words, no. ]

Think we're all supposed to go. PR thing.

[That Rookie didn't set up, for once.]

Besides, there'll be booze.

So. Wanna go with me?

[... okay, no. This is the best part of asking that question. At least he doesn't start laughing? He just speaks very, very slowly and very, very clearly.]

Do you want to go to the dance with me?

[Seriously; he would have asked Kaylee, but she's taken. Also, your reaction is hysterical.]

[ ok ok CALM DOWN he probably just means like. arriving together. because neither of them have dates. like girls do when they don't have dates. he doesn't mean like O'BRIEN BEING HIS DATE.

right.

Anyway there's all this panic on his face before he visibly ejects that train of thought and chooses to go forward with the assumption that dateless guys stick together and that's the only reason. ]

S-seriously? You couldn't get a date? Thought the chicks would be falling all over you.

[He notices that look on his face. He isn't going to assume what O'Brien is thinking. If he knew, though, he'd be curious about the fact that he's about to ruin the poor man's neat little world view. Why so narrow, Spike?]

No one said I had to ask a girl.

[ :C Because the nail that sticks out gets hammered down. Or disappears quietly in a back alley somewhere. He's already terrified of being judged as useless without the extra excitement of being judged as different.

ALSO YOU'RE SCARING HIM AGAIN WITH THAT ANSWER. ]

But.

[ so weakly, ]

What?

[Rookie has never bothered with it. If someone is going to judge him... let them judge. It's their problem if they don't like it.

H-HE'S SORRY?]

Didn't stutter, O'Brien.

[He pauses for a moment, considering. But he's freaking you out, so he decides to leave an out.]

Can say no. I won't mind.

[ A tiny little voice is telling him that this is where he needs to break into shouting, keep up appearances and act outraged, CONDEMN THE SCARY, but he can't yell at Rookie. Yelling at Rookie makes him feel like he's five and trying to force someone to believe something that is painfully and obviously wrong and Rookie can see through all his bullshit.

Also this is him pathetically marshaling his courage to continue this conversation. ]

Wouldn't you rather... with a chick, though...?

[Rookie, as always, would just wait for him to finish and find one sentence to act as a rebuttal. In truth he half-expected yelling from him; O'Brien is the noisy one of their unlikely squad, not him. When it's that question instead, he's a bit surprised.]

Know you better than any of them.

[Which is his major point. He doesn't feel comfortable asking people that are mostly strangers to him to a dance. And if nothing else, O'Brien is his squadmate, which gves him some level of familiarity with him.]
