Is the arbitrary celebration of your birth so important?

I have people that I like to be with during arbitrary celebrations.

But why are they important?

In the grand scheme of things, they're not. They recognize the fact that you're getting older, but you grow whether you recognize it or not.

So why bother?

Because it is pointless.

I've liked most of the birthdays I've had.

Then why not have one here?

[emberandash]

I'll be having one here whether I like it or not, unless I'm sent home within the next two weeks.

But when I was younger I liked my birthdays because they were lavish parties that the entire country celebrated, and when I was a little older I liked them because they were a chance to do special things with people who were important to me.

I'm not really interested in the first here, obviously, and the second isn't an option.

I talk to people sometimes, if that's what you mean.

It is not.

Back home I have the people who I love most in the world. Any world.

Here... well, I already said it. I talk to people sometimes. Maybe there are one or two that I could consider a casual friend, but I don't know. I don't really make friends easily.

Friendships are useless, anyway.

The people you choose to be family aren't.
