» 007 [video] [backdated to the day of Pino's birthday party]

[Someone forgot that a certain birthday girl had managed to make the fake rabbit ears stick to his helmet. He rumbles quietly--a decidedly not bunny-like noise--for a moment in thought before he addresses the device.]...What is the point in celebrating a "birthday"? And. Why is it considered fun to pretend to be an animal? Or, something that one is ( Read more... )

[O-Oh my stars don't mention the ears don't laugh and don't mention the ears.]

Don't you celebrate the day you were written? That's kind of what a birthday is, I guess. It's like saying, "wow, I'm lucky enough to have been here for another year!" And it's also just a time to acknowledge that person and be thankful for knowing them. Thing like that.

Heh, and pretending, well! I'm not really sure why it's fun. I guess because you get to step out of yourself for a little bit. You can run around doing other things, stuff you wouldn't normally do. It's fun! But, I guess fun itself is kind of hard to define.

No. [And he doesn't have the processing power to image CLU giving him presents for acknowledging such a cycle either.] I am still not sure that has a meaning or serves a purpose. It seems pointless.

...acknowledged. ["Hard" is an understatement for someone who only thinks of it as "winning" and/or "killing the target".]

Well, is there anyone who you're really happy to have around? I mean, you appreciate that sort of thing daily, but a birthday is when you really get to celebrate it. Also there's presents and free food!

Programs do not require consumption of "food" products. Presents do not...always make sense. [He really just can't comprehend this, man.]

Heh...well, it's not really about that. It's about being happy. You know?

No.

...Oh.

Well. You have emotions, right? Like, you feel happy sometimes?

[He rumbles uncertainly, uncomfortable with the question.]

W-Well you don't have to answer! Sorry! But like. Hm...like. Like say you do something really well, like, you fulfill your uh, like...directive? You do that and you do a really good job of it or something! And, maybe afterward someone says, "Hey, good job there, you did well!" That's--that's kinda what it's like? Except, the directive is to just, be alive and exist and be a person that some other people might like and care about. It's kinda like that, I guess. Oh stars, I think I just made it even more confusing...

[The comparison to a directive was the best way to get Rinzler to understand anything. Unfortunately after the initial attempt it was lost on the enforcer. Perhaps it was too loose of a directive to make a good comparison; perhaps it sounded simply too much like an ISO's lack of directive, and ISOs were merely a thing for Rinzler to destroy.

He growled.]

[He's really kind of not used to AIs/robots that are like Rinzler, intelligent but on the cusp of things like emotions. Back home the machines either have simple AIs or they're so advanced they can experience the full spectrum of human emotion.]

I guess it...must be hard to understand.

Pointless.

It's not, though. I mean, heh...not for us organics, I guess. Emotions tell us how to react to situations and help us establish relationships, things like that. And...really, brains, or at least human brains are just incredibly complicated computers. But, yeah. It's all really complicated.
