[So Vaultie? Has been gone for a while. Like, a long while. A month or so? He hasn't been seen in his room, or in polite society at all, really-

His video flickers on, and the view goes a little wild. The orange visor takes up the entire screen.]

Guys!

[He pulls back. And he lifts a little ball of fuzz a la Simba towards the camera: it looks to ( Read more... )

...You aren't going to eat the dog, right?

No, of course not.

[He turns the dog around, his face reflected in Vaultie's visor.]

I mean- even if he died, I don't think I would. Too small to get anything off of him.

...But...then why did you call him Dogmeat?

My dog at home- his name is Dogmeat.

That's one cute dog, kiddo.

[He remembers Vaultie calling Dug "Dogmeat" during the Marker incident, so he's not too worried about Capital Wasteland gustatory habits.]

He is. But look-

[He opens the puppy's mouth deftly- healthy pink gums and little nubby teeth. The puppy licks at his fingers and squirms.]

I found him like this. All by himself, but he looks healthy- big paws, so he'll grow up big, and be able to defend himself.

[Defend himself from what, kid?]

That's a lot of growing.

[Seriously, those paws look like they belong on a different dog.]

[Monsters. Irradiated beasts. Molerats. There are many things.]

Yeah, but- if I have him from the start, I can teach him a lot of things. [Vaultie puts the puppy down and it starts to sniff around.] It might take a year or two, but he'll be ready for hunting and fighting.

That's fucked up.

[Yes. He's just going to assume that Vaultie's talking about eating the poor dog. Seriously, dude, that pup doesn't even look all that appetizing.]

He's-

[Wait is it a he? Double-checks and- yup ok all good.] He's all okay? There are no mutations, dogs don't really suffer much from mutation and radiation other than hair loss.

Not entirely what I meant.

[Actually, it's not what he meant at all, but Raimi's getting more and more used to saying that around here.]

Fuck it... You're not planning on eating him.

Are you?

No. He's too tiny to eat.

[He pushes him closer to the screen. See? Too tiny.] But he's big for a puppy. Strong and healthy- he'll make a good pet, he'll grow up big and strong.

... No. He's my dog. Dogs are very capable fighters, when they grow up. You have to give them time.

[sdfgh name, not food, okay

Abby is visibly relieved.] Sorry, the way you said that it sounded like you were planning on eating him. But he's your pet?

[He brought up fighting, but this time she'll give him the benefit of the doubt and not immediately assume he's raising it for dogfights. No need to make an arse of herself twice in a row.] ...Or more of a guard dog?

Is that considered... a delicacy where you're from? [Trying to be culturally sensitive while also being horrified. Mostly failing.]

I- no? Dog meat is very common, I guess. There are a lot of ferals out there, but they're tough, and irradiated.

... Is it a delicacy where you're from? [Will she try to eat his dog? Gardenia this relationship will not work if you eat his dog.]

I only if I have to. It is not very good at all.

[He cradles babby Dogmeat.] Have you ever had a puppy? My first dog- I found him full-grown, so I didn't have to train him. But I'll have to train this one.
