[Flynn is sitting at a desk, not paying attention to the camera. Floating in the air in front of him are the usual forest of holographic displays, and a light blue geometric solid (first stellation of the icosidodecahedron, if you were curious.)]

Diagnostics all clean?

[The floating shape turns into an orange octahedron and answers him in a ( Read more... )

Not much of a conversationalist, is it?

It's a binary digit. It's only got two states.

[In the background, Bit confirms this with a "yes."]

...yeah, that would make sense.

[Flynn looks over his shoulder at the Bit.]

Hey, Bit, can you hold a value between one and zero?

[Bit explodes into a spiky red form as it answers.]

No!

[Flynn turns back to Raimi and grins.]

Thereya go.

[Flynn wasn't exaggerating when he called that a Bit, was he? This was a representation of an actual Bit from his home system.

Delta is fascinated.]

You created them?

Nah, they're native to the first Grid. Re-implemented 'em on the second Grid, though. Having a switch that can make its own decisions is actually pretty handy.

[Bit chimes in with a few "yes"es, and then, curious, floats down in front of Delta's hologram and idles there.]

[He moves his hologram over to--well, not poke it, exactly, but get up as close as he can to it.]

Possessed of their own sentience, within binary parameters?

[And cute. Delta admittedly didn't understand the human concept of "cute" as it applied to children and small animals very well, but he felt a instant fondness for this little Bit. It was much like the emotion York felt looking at puppies.]

Yep. Little comedians, some of 'em.

[He pokes Bit with a forefinger, and it responds with a spiky "no!" but doesn't seem to be holding a grudge, since it immediately returns to its quiet blue form and doesn't float away.]

Flynn. Why is there a Bit with you?

[He really hopes he's not hallucinating again.]

Programmed it.

[Bit floats down next to Flynn's head and emphasizes the point with a string of "yes"es.]

[Oh good, at least this one is real.]

For what... purpose?

I...what?

[Purpose?

What are you getting at, here?]

[Flynn might be comforted to see that Rinzler seems to be doing better than their last conversation ended. Either that or the enforcer is so curious about this Bit nonsense that he's settled into considerably less destructive behavior.

He tilts his head slightly and reaches out towards the camera as if to poke at the Bit, stopping short of course. He only vaguely remembers the Grid-creatures.]

...Where did you get it?

I wrote it.

[You're talking to the Creator, man.

Bit bobs up and down in the air, backing Flynn up with a few "yes"es.]

But. [This is the User world. How did it... how did you... Where did it come from?] ...Shouldn't it be in a computer?

It is.

[Flynn holds up his hand to show off his wearable.]

It's just manifesting a hologram.

What is that? Is it alive?

Mm. In a manner of speaking.

[Bit doesn't seem to have an opinion on this one, and just floats in its blue idle form.]

No!

It's science.

[Ignore them. The Grid is basically magic.]
