[For a moment, Tron ponders not answering, but chooses his words carefully.]
It is difficult to define. Friendship. Trust enough to do anything for a person. Willingness to stand by their side no matter what situation may arise.

[There is a longer moment of silence here. Tron remembers all too well being this way, but putting the feeling into words is more difficult than he would anticipate.]
Forced loyalty... no choice in it. There is no friendship or trust, no way to escape. Loyalty gives you a choice in your actions... that does not. You have to follow the orders.

[The answer surprises him because he was expecting a more concise definition when instead it encompasses the exact issue that was troubling him in the first place. Even though this is what he was looking for. His reply is slower, takes more thoughtful processing to make than before. It sounds very reluctant as well.]
There is a difference. Standard definition insufficient. ...different in practice than in objective point. Subtle. Hard..to ...grasp.
[Audio/Same encryption]fight4theusersMay 10 2011, 08:01:26 UTC
Of course there is a difference. The difference is choice. [Tron sounds surprised that there was even any question about this.]
[He's curious, he really is, and he struggles for a moment before continuing. Flynn did tell him to try not to provoke Rinzler, after all, and he does know what it was like to be under that programming.]
[Audio/Same encryption]double_discsMay 10 2011, 08:07:16 UTC
No.
[The answer is quick and firm. Perhaps a little too rapid and emphasized to Tron's input.
Rinzler's struggle to give further answer is likely not helpful in convincing otherwise. But to the enforcer there is no question. Only a new way of understanding.]
...No. I am ...loyal... to CLU. He is...important.
[Audio/Same encryption]fight4theusersMay 10 2011, 08:36:36 UTC
Once. Yes... when I was like you, and known as Rinzler. Do you forget that I was as you are, not too long ago?
So yes. He was important to me... I believed myself loyal to him, and did everything he asked, without question.
[There's a deep, shuddering breath. He doesn't want to fall into another flashback; he doesn't have Flynn here to help him through it, this time.]
But everything was a lie. Everything, do you understand? Everything I thought I wanted, everything he gave me, every pl-... happiness I felt... it was all from that corrupted code. Once I got rid of that, I knew.
[And it nearly killed him from the guilt and self-loathing. He still struggles with it...]
[Audio/Same encryption]double_discsMay 10 2011, 09:04:30 UTC
...no. [It's a whine more than a word. Distressed is it's very definition. 'Denial' would be a second best.] Not a...not a lie...
[And as if with sudden realization at those words, he continues with more steadiness, with conviction.] CLU does not lie. CLU has never lied. He hates lies. He would not lie to me!
[Audio/Same encryption]fight4theusersMay 12 2011, 07:23:03 UTC
[Tron's voice is agitated, the memories of his time with Clu still too fresh in his mind.] He may not lie to you directly, but whatever you feel for him, Rinzler... it's only part of what code he's written into you. You're programmed to obey anything he tells you. You're... designed to want him.
It is not your own thoughts, can't you see that? You have memories of Tron, don't you? How did you feel about Clu before?
Agreed. What is it you wish to discuss?

Define: loyalty.

Why do you ask this now?

Define.

Need to know.

Are you questioning your own... loyalties?

Are you certain of that? Or is that idea part of your rectification?

[But he isn't about to tell Tron about his sessions with Flynn. No. Just, no.]
No. I am loyal to CLU. He is important...to me.

He was... important to me too. Once. I thought...
But I was wrong. It was only his programming... I know that now.

Once? Wrong? Why?
