Quietly Acquiescent by Zan

A cadence circumscribes the dust.
A name, to join our quest is all I ask.
“Draw your sword.” Is all, you say.
The heart knows words will be useless today.

Your aura resonates and in your piercing eyes
…the world tumbles, away it flies.
It is a wordless request for a dance.
Your reply, step, step, step … is a silent acquiescence.

I do not need to take in the measure of you as a man
I know by the way you hold your swords and from your stand.
In turn do you approve I wonder? Do you like what you see?
Am I worth your fealty?

You parry, twist, feint and vault.
In a mute lead, into the air you somersault.
In this harmony your chest is hardly heaving.
Still it drums loud in my ears, your careful breathing.

You block, thrust and you slash. My eyes query.
“Are you in my circle by design?” Maybe I am the quarry.
Our swords cross that space within …
…that resides a deep understanding.

To know, even as we bleed
What direction to follow, with no lead.
Pulses rise and slow to match
With no verbal affirmation required to confirm the catch.

What transpires is an oath.
The heart feels your presence like a shadow.
Although insubstantial, it is no less binding.
The signatures in blood and the hum of steel, it sings.

All quiet now, silent and still.
Now a parting of ways until,
Such a time as will,
To en-join, to thus our promise fulfil.
