Seesaw
Hyunseung rubbed his neck before trying to hoist his backpack up higher. He sighed; being an 8 year old was hard. He had lots of homework to do and no time for fun.
He kicked a rock as he approached the park, leaving a scuff mark on his shoe. He would have continued kicking the rock, but something at the playground caught his attention.
A young boy, maybe a year younger than himself, with blond hair was sitting on the seesaw, his feet resting on the dirt and his head bowed, all by himself.
Hyunseung rolled his eyes, didn’t that kid know that you needed two to play on the seesaw. He shook his head and made his way over to the blond haired boy.
“Don’t you know that in order to make the seesaw work you need two people on it?”
There was no response from the other boy, so Hyunseung sighed and stomped his foot. “Hello?”
The blond haired bot let out a sniffle as he lifted his head up, his eyes were red and puffy, and his cheeks were wet with tears. The blond locked eyes with Hyunseung, but didn’t say anything.
Hyunseung’s eyes went wide. He recognized the other boy (he heard the boy’s mother call him Dongwoon) from the same apartment building he and his family lived in. the blond always had a smile on his face, waving at everyone, including Hyunseung (who would give a small smile back), but now that the younger wasn’t smiling, Hyunseung wasn’t’ sure what to do.
The older boy ran a hand through his brown curls. “Um…” He didn’t know what to say.
Dongwoon sniffled again. “I k-know you need t-two people, b-but no one w-wanted to play w-with me.” He let out a cry.
Hyunseung narrowed his eyes. Well, that’s not nice of the other kids. And why wouldn’t anyone want to play with someone who looked like a…a…
“You look like a prince, you know that.”
Dongwoon tilted his head to the side in confusion.
“Well, you do. And Princes are strong and brave and they don’t cry.” Hyunseung shook his head, brown curls going this way and that. “No they don’t. So, since you look like a Prince you shouldn’t cry also.” He nodded his head, satisfied with his explanation.
Dongwoon stared for a moment, his eyes blinking away remnants of tears, before smiling.
“My mom calls me her Little Prince.”
Hyunseung smiled. “See! So don’t cry.”
Dongwoon wiped at his cheeks and stood up. “You look like a Princess.”
Hyunseung sighed. “I know, it’s the hair.”
Dongwoon shook his head. “No, it’s cause your face it pretty.” He grinned.
Hyunseung blinked several times in surprise. Not because of Dongwoon’s words, but because of how large and beautiful the other’s grin was. But, before Hyunseung could come up with a response, Dongwoon’s grin fell and he lowered his head.
“Um, do you…do you want to play with me?”
Hyunseung gave a small laugh, thinking that Dongwoon was shy and cute. “Of course!”
Dongwoon’s head shot up, his eye’s hopeful and his smile appearing again. “Really?”
Hyunseung shrugged his shoulders. “Yeah.” He grinned. “Aren’t Princes and Princesses supposed to be together?”
Dongwoon’s grin was back and before Hyunseung could blink again the smaller boy lunged at him, wrapping his arms around the curly-haired boys waist, and burying his head in the elders shoulder.
“You’re the best Hyung ever!” Dongwoon lifted his head up. “You can call me Woonie.”
Hyunseung patted him on the head. “Okay Prince Woonie.” He grinned. “You can call me Seungie.”
“Princess Seungie.”
Hyunseung was sure that he would later regret letting Dongwoon call him that, but he couldn’t really bring himself to care right now,
Dongwoon’s smile was making it difficult to feel anything but happy.
He ruffled Dongwoon’s hair. “Okay. Now come on.” He dropped his backpack, pesky homework forgotten. “We have some seesawing to do!”
Hyunseung didn’t think that Dongwoon’s grin could get any bigger or brighter than it was right now.
