Edward II and obnoxious fan girls

Dec 29, 2007 14:19

On Thursday, I finally got to see the Christopher Marlowe play Edward II at the Red Bull Theatre. I met sweetmadameblue, Mr. Madame and janeaustinfan at the apartment they had rented and after gabbing and giggling for a bit it was off to the theatre.

The theatre is small, only about 90 seats and on the fourth floor. We were hoping that a Thursday night would not have any gigling fangirls but alas, what do we see when we get there? Two girls, not more than 18, who are giggling loudly and talking about Justin. *Sigh* Except for rolling our eyes, we ignored them. Madame and her husband had front row center seats and tragically the fangirls were right behind them. I was on the fourth row right and Bobbie was on the third row left. Not really a bas seat in the house, but the front row puts you REALLY close to the actors. Madame almost got a lapfull a couple of times!

Kenajuan Bentley who played Gaveston was great as was Matthew Rauch who played Mortimer. The rest were OK, but I never really warmed to Marc Vietor who played Edward II. Randy was OK, his part wasn't big but it was certainly beefed up from the original Marlowe. He only has one scene where he says more than a few words. The costumes were Nazi stormtroopers meets the Matrix, with leather thrown in.

After the play, the fangirls, who had found two other girls to squee with, were in what passed for the lobby talking, loudly again, about how much they loved Justin, how they didn't like Ethan, wondering if Simon was going to be there, etc., just trying to show off. Honestly, STFU and grow up! We were waiting for the elevator and saw Randy sneak out and make a well rehearsed escape down the steps. We debated whether to tell the girls that they missed their opportunity, but figured that Randy just needed to escape. For all i know, those girls are still there.

Anyway, back to the apartment we went. Mr. Madame went to bed and Madam, Bobbie, and I sat up talking for hours. My 17 year old even called to check up on me! Guess i missed my curfew. I crashed on their couch and crept out of the apartment just before 6 am so I could get back to NJ and go to work. Thankfully ny boss is in Vermont skiing.

Fangirls: 1) Randy Harrison is not Justin Taylor, he just played him on TV. And very well I might add. But he doesn't want to be called Justin, so don't. 2) Know a little something about the play you are going to see. It will make you seem like less of an idiot. 3) No one, and I mean NO ONE outside of your group, cares how many times you have seen QAF, how much you love Justin, hate Ethan, etc. Discussing that loudly makes you sound even more idiotic and immature than you are.

Rant over. I had a wonderful time with sweetmadameblue" and janeaustinfan and hope to meet up with them next time they come to NYC.
