Okay, I may be one of the few anglo-saxon-type people who grew up in the USA who never tried the whole green-bean-casserole-with-onions thing as a kid - honestly, my mom just never made it, she must not have liked it, I dunno, so I never knew what it was. Consequently, I always viewed it ("it" meaning all of the press the damned recipe gets) with no little suspicion, and thought the whole idea sounded a little.... nasty, actually.
Don't get me wrong - I like green beans, I like mushroom soup - but onions have never been a fav, unless they are either carmelized (and even THAT I never tasted until adulthood) or, preferably, covered in beer batter and deep fried, with a side of BBQ sauce for dipping. :-) I may be the only person I know who would go through a drive-through and order a burger with no onions, and onion rings. And the combo of all of it just did not sound appetizing.
But a few years ago, I had T-day at a friend's house (I think mom went to see my bro in PA that year) and they proudly served it, so - I put the "polite" spoonful on my plate. And surprisingly, I liked it. A LOT. I had seconds. And possibly thirds.
So, my mom died last year, and this is my first T-Day without any family obligations, which is a little sad but also actually kind of nice because hey, no airplane ride. I looked forward to a lazy day, eating what I wanted, lap full of cats, a good bottle of bubbles, never changing out of the pjs, and football/the "Burn Notice" marathon on USA. And I laid in the proper supplies, including ingredients to make the green beans if I felt so inclined.
French's - the fried onion people, in their infinite GENIUS - are now making CHEESE-FLAVORED fried onions, which I gotta tell you are so, so, so, stupidly good as a topping for the whole green bean thing. Seriously. Salty, cheesy, crispy - oh Lady, perfection.
This is a really weird thing to be thankful for, isn't it? I blame the bubbly. (It's very, very good bubbly. :-)
Happy Thanksgiving, all. :-)
