I think last week's account of the man who was stabbed several dozen times to death and then beheaded on a bus in Canada has disturbed me more than anything I've ever read in the news. Like, in my entire life. I've thought about it everyday since I read it and wish I could un-read it.
And it's not so much the horror as it is the sadness of it. Apparently the murderer somehow managed to pick the nicest, most caring person in the entire world to butcher. Can you imagine being 22, with loving friends and family, excited about the prospect of a lifetime of new experiences ahead of you, only to have it all end when some psycho wakes you from your nap by stabbing you in the neck in front of a Greyhound full of strangers? Can you imagine being a family member who not only has to accept the loss of a son or a brother, but also has to bear the gruesomeness of the crime and the thought of the agony and terror that kid must have suffered?
Stuff like this is the reason I can't be opposed to the death penalty, and it's a pity Canada doesn't have it. If the victim was my family, I'd want the killer destroyed regardless of his mental state. His act was so savage that he should be treated more like a rabid dog than a human being, and he's too far gone to ever be made well enough to live in free society. He'll always be a monster.
in the news,
humanity is awful
