V. 1
The rain was pelting down when I emerged from the station
Falling on passers-by with an enmity reserved only for the elements
I stopped at the edge, where water met concrete, and reconsidered the dash across the street
I lit a cigarette and waited for the inevitable,
A break in the clouds that took it's time emerging from the torrents
As the smoke curled upwards in the saturated air
Lightning crackled across the sky
And lit the steel grey air like the last bulb burning out in a dark room
The people around me, fellow prisoners of the rain
Shifted and made stilted conversation about the storm,
Laughing at no one's joke
But when acknowledged I only nodded, smiled slightly,
And wondered why the music in my ears always fit the mood.
V. 2
Alone on a train aimlessly wandering...
As the smoke curled upwards in the saturated air
Lightning crackled across the sky
And lit the steel grey evening like the camera flash in a long forgotten memory
Stored away somewhere for safe-keeping against remembrance
The people around me, fellow prisoners of the rain
Shifted and made stilted conversation about the storm,
Laughing at no one's joke
I've no words to share with anyone...
But when acknowledged I only nodded, smiled slightly,
And wondered why the music in my ears always fits the mood.
