I've just seen the new Harry Potter movie (Goblet of Fire), and to be honest it was all right. I've been hearing all the hype about how it's "the darkest one yet" and that it's "rather scary". I can see how this would be true. If I was 10. Maybe it's the fact that I'm 21 that ruins a bit of the scary parts for me, but oh well, that's something that cannot be changed. But, there were a few things in this movie that I did find dissapointing. And for those of you who care if I spoil it, well to bad. The book is out there a-willing to give it all away. So, here goes.
1. THE QUIDDITCH WORLD CUP
The whole world cup sequence leaves a bit to the imagination. Although the visual stuff is really impressive (the stadium was great), much beyond the aesthetics was lacking and the whole match was reduced to what felt like a mere tool to introduce Victor Krum, and a convenient way to remind us that the whole Malfoy family is a gnarly group of folk. Personally, I wanted more quidditch. That would have been sweet.
2. DUMBLEDORE FREAKING OUT
I don't know about anyone else, but when I read the books I picture Dumbledore as an old man who is not prone to letting his emotions or thoughts be known by those around him. And I have to admit that I really am dissapointed in Michael Gambon's most recent protrayl of the headmaster. It seems that any little thing will set Dumbledore off. Coffee gone cold? TIME FOR A TIRADE! Wand get caught in your beard? TIME FOR A TIRADE! As you can see I really don't like this Dumbledore who is prone to freaking out. It's just not the way I picture the dude. Let's return to the days of the Richard Harris, Dumbledore.
3. VOLDEMORT COULD HAVE BEEN A WHOLE LOT SCARIER
Yep, it's true. The Dark Lord himself wasn't really all that scary. It's true that what you picture is always worse in your head than what's going to be in front of your eyes, but he could have been a heck of a lot scarier. In fact, I think he DESERVED to be a whole lot scarier. Which leads me to the next thing...
4. VOLDEMORT FREAKING OUT
What's the deal here? First Dumbledore, and now Voldemort? I would have thought that part of Voldemort's creepiness was in the fact that he too was a master of his emotions and the way he was read by others. The Voldemort I saw in the screen flitted about in his bare feet and I thought he was going to start carrying on like a child at one point. Not what you want to see from what is supposed to be the most evil wizard of all time.
5. MOANING MERTYLE MAKING A PASS AT HARRY
There's many things I can go my whole life not seeing. And this is one of them. It's just weird. Awkward and weird. I know that Harry is moving more into his teenage years (and all that comes with it) in this film, but do we really have to address the subject of awakening sexuality by having a ghost make a pass at a naked Harry in a bubble bath after trying to sneak a peak at his...well...you get the idea. It's just wrong. True, they did give the film a PG-13 rating, so I guess I can't fault them for giving no warning. But honestly when this stuff was on screen I was looking for a child whose eyes should be covered. Goodness gracious.
6. ANGRY RON!!!!
Ron should never be angry. Ever. It's just sad. Especially when he says, "Piss off." I know this is in the book as well, but it's still sad.
Ok, I think that's it for now. Can't give to much away can I?
