Dependent?
If you are the spouse or child of someone in the military, you are called a dependent. I understand why and I don't have a better suggestion for a name, but it has always bothered me. It implies that you need them and that you can't help yourself. Most military dependents I know have at some point in time been moved to a foreign country and left alone for months at a time not knowing anyone or even seeing the person that they are "dependent" on. They are some of the most independent people that I know.
