You know things are bad when , after using a variety of different brushes, bristles, pads, wipes, and cleaners - to no avail - you actually resort to using sandpaper in order to finally and successfully clean off the scuzzy 'ring' in the toilet bowl.

lol.
But it is sparkly white-clean now, ha. :D
