“I told you we had things in common,” Kirk gloats later.
“Hmm,” Spock says, and takes his rook. “Check.”
“Damn.” Kirk sighs. “All right, all right, I get the point.”
He reveals himself to be an excellent chess player, though, enough of a challenge that Spock really does want to continue playing with him. But it turns out to be impossible to

The part I absolutely love the most is Jim’s confession of his feelings to Spock. It’s so simple and sweet and intimate and utterly him. You made me curl up in a ball on my bed and grin to myself, damn you! ♥
There’s a million things I can say about how incredible this is (and a million lines I could quote as pure gold), but then this comment would end up as a dissertation. So I’m just going to reiterate that this was awesome. :D

I'm really happy the confession part worked for you. In my humble opinion, Jim is terribly affectionate at his core underneath all the awesome in-charge-Captainness, and so I'm sooo glad to hear that came across as authentic. Yeah, your comment made me curl up in a ball on MY bed and grin, so I'm not apologizing for that. ;) Thank you ten times over. ♥

their instruments fit perfectly, everytime you let on what they played i was struck with the thought of how much it made sense for them to play that. Their personalities matching what I have percieved as the type of person to play that (I've been in band for 7ish years), and especially with Kirk being a trumpet player.
He is just such a trumpet player, like Scotty is a percussianist and Sulu is a celloist. Although, this is me stereotyping a little bit, but your fic just amplifys how people's personalities come out in their instruments.
I also enjoyed how Spock liked Kirk before he knew him, but then had to grow to enjoy the person he actually was.
