Weekly News a.k.a New Vocaloid Roundup

Nov 25, 2011 00:42

Happy Thanksgiving, core demographic!

It's been a slow week and I'm still kinda wobbly, and you lot are probably going around tobogganing on top of turkeys or whatever it is you do, so I'm going to postpone a little on the actual linkdump while still trying to get it in before or at least on time with the ranking. Which is a good plan, because this way I can do the news. And by 'news', I mean 'link the million and one demos that have cropped up over the last week'.

Oliver:

- The full version of Scarborough Fair. I think it's fair to say Oliver's probably the most understandable Engloid out there, and he handles going up and down scales very well. I'm not sure I like the long held notes quite as much, though that could just be a problem with the song rather than with the Vocaloid; out of all the possible long and crooning English trad. songs you could go for, Scarborough Fair is certainly way up there.

- Oliver's cover of Sonika's Dinky Dink is... certainly something, a fast little earworm of a song with catchy if repetitive lyrics. By and large, it still sounds great - you'll spot a little fuzziness at the end of sentences, but it's all entirely excusable. I'm worried about how well Oliver can handle lower registers - at about 1:10 it goes into a lower section that ends on a really wonky note - but by and large this is very encouraging for the state of Engloids.

- I'm still not really on board with his design, though. A little sailor kid is fine, but a little sailor kid with a permanent animal mascot and moe injury bandages seems like it's trying too hard in a lesser version of the Tone Rion clause.

CUL:

- I, er, er, hmm. CUL's most recent demo, Nightmare. I kind of like her design - it's rather more in theme with the other Vocaloids, not too complex, but I kind of preferred her Vocarevo version, boring as it might have been. The song itself is really far too stark to give a proper impression of the voice - left alone as it is and not backed up by any substantial music it's far too easy to find flaws in it, and I'm hoping that that's the reason behind a V3 voicebank sounding almost exactly like V1 Meiko...

Yuzuki Yukari:

Straight out of nowhere, Vocalomakets in colloboration with AHS reveals the new Vocaloid they've had under production together with a trio of demo videos.

- There's a lot of major talent on board to help back Yuzuki up. The idea is that they're going to try to pull her into multiple different styles, and to that end a team of seven producers have been assembled - with azuma and kagome as stand-out names as far as I'm concerned.

- Demo songs are here, here (my favorite) and here, and they all sound like it's coming along very well. I'm not sure these initial barrage of videos quite represent the range they want to be going for, exactly, but then we're a little spoilt by SeeU's slew of crazy demo styles. Kagome'll catch up.

IA:

- No demos yet, as far as I know, but someone's been watching way too much Guilty Crown.

Not Actually A Vocaloid:

- ko_shibasaki / DECO*27 / Teddyloid collaboration Galaxias! gets a super shiny and most importantly official MMDPV, choreographed by Yumiko and animated by Masataka. That's a lot of big names.

Other Things:

- I've got a hold of the Sapporo Live video now, and I have to say this is a whole damn sight better than the 39s concert this year, easily on par or better than 39s 2010. I heartily recommend everyone try to get a hold of it.

- Diva Extend is hard as balls, and that's great. I'm getting my ass handed to me by even some eight-star songs; I can't wait for Dreamy Theatre Extend (come on, you know it'll happen) so I can take these on without worrying about the PSP slipping out of my hands or something.

oh god how did this get here:
