I'd been holding off on this video specifically to wait for the Scatman re-enactment from Reimu and Rin, but unfortunately it appears to have disappeared. Anyway, what a Cup, holy hell. MMD 6th Cup didn't have a lot of immediate impact, as a lot of the humour and style was bound up within talkloid videos or lengthy skits; no such worries here, as we're faced with a slew of thumping music videos and a staggering amount of fight scenes. Certain themes keep coming through; most notably there's a large number of 'self-celebratory' MMD videos, combined with a whole bunch about Miku up and dying on people.
The themes were 魔 (magic, demons, etc), 真 (truths, absolutes), 間 (a space or room), ピタゴラ的装置 (a Rube Goldberg machine), 縄文時代 (the Jomon age), or 'M'. As you might expect, a majority of people went for that last one. Turns out it's not really that hard to fulfil when your main character's named Miku...
Low-quality can mulch some of these videos; if you're having trouble loading them on Nicovideo then don't forget about
Polsy's player or
Nicoviewer. Alternatively, MMD Cup tends to get mirrored very fast; searching the title on youtube will typically provide results. If I've missed your favorite - which is likely, I had to prune my list so much - feel free to pipe up.
Best In Show
Sweet Magic (MMDPV: sekken, Music: Junky, Cast: Touhou)
With a staggering 300k views just over the course of the weekend, Touhou have run away with the Cup with this fantastic video for a fantastic song. Junky's tracks have always been joyful and full of energetic guitars and his latest non-vocaloid song lives up to his pedigree; combine with a great choreography and two well-produced Touhou models and mix to serve. I've had this on repeat for a stupidly long time.
EVERYBODYEVERYBODY (MMDPV: kiyo, Music: Backstreet, Cast: Assorted)
Is... is this even a contest? I don't think it is! Go watch this now and feel your life be enriched!
Vocaloid/Music:
Heart Beats PVHeart Beats (MMDPV: ussy, Music: emon, Cast: Miku)
It's really no surprise that ussy's right up there amongst the best videos of the MMD Cup. He's one of the most prolific effects and background designers for the problem, and huge numbers of videos this cup have his name in the credits somewhere for his work. It's a bit of a shame that Luka can't show up for her own song, but this is one staggeringly shiny version with the latest in MME effects.
Uraomote Lovers (MMDPV: magician, Music: wowaka, Cast: Miku)
No mess, no fuss: a straight-laced and very solid dance routine for wowaka's hit. The camera work's probably the best part of this video, but it makes good use of MMD's space and ability to switch between stages on top of that.
【KAITO】Every Time I Come Home My Wife Pretends To Be Dead (MMDPV: numachi, Music: ほぼ日, Cast: Miku + Kaito)
Kaito belts out a substantially listenable version of what is many people's favorite bit of Vocaloid rock about a wife who just has to demonstrate her love via fake blood and animal props, and along with it comes a really, really cute video that's impossible to dislike.
LAT MODELS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE. Initial grar about them all looking the damn same aside, I have to admit this is a pretty delightful video. It's really hard to hate anything that involves Melancholic, and the choreography is very solid when it gets going.
I love Techno Break, okay. I think it's a neat little song with a hilarious dance routine, and this video really makes the best of it with some great little touches and slapstick here and there, together with the very finest selection in Len models and some extra special guests. If Gakupo's set alone doesn't get you grinning, I don't know what to tell you. You might just not feel joy.
Lots of them.)
If you're a little confused and wondering why I've linked Techno Break a second time, your questions will all be answered just by watching the video. Whereas the first was a straight-up silly assault on the senses, the second is a bizarre and wonderful mish-mash of stop motion effects and crazy style.
Truth in a Bottle (MMDPV: 少々, Music: 少々, Cast: Assorted)
I think this is the video that's finally established it for me: I really like the Luka CMell model, and I think it's pretty much the only viable Luka model for really HD work right now. There's still a kind of weird shape to the body, but it looks a damn sight better than any alternatives. Here she croons through a song to try to help Defoko forget that Gakupo is two-timing on her with Rin.
... yeah that sentence didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, either.
BadApple!! feat.Miku&TetoBad Apple!! (MMDPV: G-tama, Music: Alstroemeria, Cast: Miku + Teto)
... yeaaaaaaah... while I'm prepared to accept that this is a very spectacular version of the Bad Apple!! dance that provides an excellent framerate and some smooth use of effects, I would be considerably more impressed were it not
directly cribbed from the producer's other versions of the exact same video, with nothing but models replaced. :I
The producer's name, and the subtitle for the video, both translate to 'Stripping!', which will give you a fair idea of the point of the video. A heavily effected Miku slams through a bunch of MMD effects and a bunch of outfits, and it would all be very impressive if it weren't set to goddamn WAVEFILE. I'm sick of WAVEFILE, guys, I've heard it approximately a hundred times over the last month. Every single video in the Camerawork Cup used it, and then ever more this MMD Cup. Enough with WAVEFILE! Please! I'm begging you! I will even accept Love and Joy, this is how bad it's gotten!
Other/Music:
Twilight (MMDPV: ponpoko, Music: Electric Light Orchestra, Cast: EVERYONE)
A massively strong contender in the cup, and probably the best of 'fuck yeah MMD' videos this time around, Twilight is packed to the absolute brim with massive quantities of references and casts, aerial fly-bys, gleeful chases and a billion other things besides.
I know I've been waiting for this since I saw the preview. Astonishingly crisp and clear animation meets a whole lot of very tightly animated and vibrant scenes in a parody of one of the more famous bits of Squaresoft intro music.
Message (MMDPV: kiriko, Music: Chrono Cross, Cast: Assorted)
Touhou Cross isn't the only one to use the rather famous bit of Squaresoft music, which made for some slightly confusing times when the video started and I wasn't wholly paying attention. The next up in the line of 'yeaaah MMD' videos, the execution is less fancy but more action-packed; look out for the Vocaloid section for some great choreography.
MMD DreamerMMD Dreamer (MMDPV: mozutani, Music: Diamond Dust, Cast: Assorted)
Better known as 'the producer of that one El Shaddai video', mozutani's entry this cup is another in the cloud of 'fuck yeah MMD' celebratory videos, and possibly the most outright shiny one. Something feels a little lacking in execution... but it's still highly impressive.
... well! I'm not sure I can really add anything to that description. Sengoku Basara take on the Panty and Stocking soundtrack, and the result is sufficiently magical that clothes will probably fly off within fifty yards.
Here It Goes Again (short ver.)Here It Goes Again (MMDPV: obandoo, Music: OK Go, Cast: Idolm@ster)
Not the full version, sadly, but this is a faithful reproduction of the OK Go classic that is only slightly less classic than that other OK Go classic that gets bandied all around Nicovideo. And it's about time we got a new dance to get pasted onto every video under the sun.
Vocaloid/Other:
【第7回MMD杯本選】 Runaway -逃亡者-Runaway (MMDPV: Kararaist, Cast: Miku / Chibi Miku / Kaito, Action)
Also known as 'every notable scene from Equilibrium packed together into one video'. The animation's silky-smooth here and the action is tremendously true to the film. There's also some really neat effects in there, from dust fog to rapid camera work.
In Search Of Miku (MMDPV: 0039, Cast: Miku, Drama)
I watched this video literally agape. I can't begin to imagine the amount of work that went into layering effects onto this video, and then on top of that I can't begin to imagine what kind of models you'd have to make to ensure it all looked correct from the side.
M.M.M.M. (MMDPV: Sigmalio, Cast: Vocaloid, Drama)
This is pretty twisted, all told. As I've already mentioned there's a whole ton of videos where Miku dies or otherwise disappears, but this is by far the more unsettling of the lot as the creepy atonal atmosphere builds. And then Boromir is given a major speaking part and he stares at the camera and oh god I just can't take it any longer.
It wouldn't be an MMD Cup without someone making Neru's life hell. Strangely, she's been somewhat neglected this cup - she certainly hasn't had the massive coverage she usually enjoys during these events, so let's include her before we lose the chance to.
Nendoroid Billiards (MMDPV: billiard, Cast: Vocaloid + Utau, Humour)
This really has nothing to do with anything beyond being a cute little throwaway video about 9-ball Pool - not bar billiards, sadly, because I would kind of love to see anyone figure out the truly arcane rules of that game.
Man, forget trying to translate that, I'm tired and have been working on this post forever. Important: turn your sound down. While this might be the most graphically impressive action video this Cup, full of masses of graphical effects as it tells the tale of two Mikus acting as virus software shortly before one of them is infected and goes mad - again - it's the worst mixed and is way, way too loud.
Other/Other:
This is basically everything I could wish for in a silly MMD video; fruit projectiles, slow-motion stunts, high-speed shopping cart drifting, and Solid Snake pulling a missile launcher out of his pants.
I'll Kick... (MMDPV: haikikku, Cast: Assorted, Humour)
Haku kicking videos are kind of par for the course for MMD Cups nowadays; for the uninitiated they consist of an unfeasibly ridiculous cast of characters all balancing off of first Haku's leg then each other, and spiralling up towards the skies. That's about it! And yet they remain some of the best videos each cup.
MMDRhythm Paradise MMD (MMDPV: takakon et al, Cast: Assorted, Humour)
A slew of producers team up to parody Rhythm Zone's particular brand of wacky minigame. The games themselves can adequately said to be Wario Ware but entirely based on sound cues; here they've been either reproduced or else twisted into something a little bit silly.
There were quite a few different Touhou fight videos this Cup, as there usually are whenever people get an opportunity to show off gratuitous particle effects. None of them really stood out for me as much as this one, though, which combines some great scenery with smooth animation and some fun stunts, while still keeping the requisite amount of bullets every fucking where.
MikuMikuSuperCombo XMikuMikuSuperComboX (MMDPV: mokokikkaa, Cast: Assorted, Action)
By the same token, there's been a lot of different fighting videos this MMD Cup; for my money, this would be the best one. The producer isn't the most technically proficient, and you'll see a lot of strange clipping on models or rough animation, but he's got a great knack for dramatics and special moves and it really shines through.
Japanese Tradition 'Prostration' (MMDPV: mokomoko, Cast: Touhou, Humour)
Taken from an extremely tongue-in-cheek series of videos about Japanese traditions and customs, this is a very strangely illustrated and animated version of one of their more famous episodes. Though it's a talkloid video to an extent, the sound is translated for you. Because otherwise how else would you learn about glorious Japanese ways?
Welcome To The Tea Party! (MMDPV: PAC, Cast: Assorted, Humour)
This entire video is basically the well-animated setup for a single piece of slapstick, but it comes so out of left field and so suddenly that I couldn't help but laugh. I would still love to know where the hell these guys come from - are they Nico originals?
Given that generally speaking adherence to the themes of the MMD Cup is treated as a guideline rather than a rule, it's nice to see one video making sure it sticks as closely to the written themes as possible.
I will tag this once my mind fully wraps itself around however many will be required.
