Weekly Roundup

Feb 15, 2011 02:15

It certainly says something about a week when the videos are so good, they delay me posting about the MMD Cup. Actually, that's half true - I've got the long list for the Cup ready but it kind of needs cutting down a bit, because what you can't see is that there's an entire other page of links still in that menu. Either way, the all-encompassing juggernaut of MMD Cup means it's a small week, but a stellar one.

Either way, it does kind of mean poor Kaito gets left out on his birthday. Anyone want to catch up on his birthday tag and whip up a post, they'd be doing me a favour. Expect a run-down of MMD Cup 6th's best tomorrow.

Edit: I had the link to DRUGS entirely wrong. Fixed now.

Videos

Sunset Love Suicide (Machigerita, Gumi, Distorted Goth Rock)
Machige's in full swing with this dark Valentine's track; still performing admirably with Vocaloids that aren't Miku, Gumi leads the track through dark quiet sections and wobbleboard into grungy organ music and crescendo sections right out of cheesy B-movies. (❤)ω(❤)

Symphony (buzzG, Miku, Rock)
How would you like your kinda-angsty pop rock today? If you answered 'done by buzzG with a fully animated video', we sure do have you covered. This is top-notch work from a veteran of the genre, and the only thing I regret is that it doesn't even clock in at three minutes; short but sweet, the rapid fame it's garnered is well deserved.

High End City (Tes., Rin, Pop)
Look, just-- screw you, Nicovideo, okay? There is no way in hell this track deserved the low number of hits it got (barely 10k at time of writing) - it's absolutely gorgeous and totally lives up to Tes' history of fun tracks. Take his usual bouncy flair for pop, add in a dash of Perfume, one (1) absolutely gorgeous saxophone, and mix until utterly addictive. Easily my favorite Rin-user right now.

Insensitive Intervening Complete Control System (hashiyasume, Miku, Pop)
A totally throwaway jpop song with some solid guitar and lovely little chiptune touches in the background!... which doesn't quite explain why this track gripped me so hard. It's energetic, fun, and catchy - and so two-dimensional in its pursuit of those attributes that I can't help but enjoy it.

BadBye (koman, Miku, Rock)
It's definitely the week for eye-catching videos, as this chaotic affair proves quite amply. The song isn't at all bad either, moving fluidly through styles at a rapid pace. One moment you'll be listening to radio chatter, the next a rousing high-speed piano solo, the next a sequence of scorching guitar riffs, and then suddenly it'll all break apart into a surprisingly tuneful chorus and crescendo.

Eleven Rave Girl (BETTI/Easypop, Luka, Eurobeattastic)
I am perhaps a little suspicious of how quickly this shot to number 1, knocking off Panda Hero in the space of what was basically a single day, as I don't class it anywhere near as catchy as some of BETTI's other stuff. That said, it's far from a bad tune in its own right, and if you're a fan of the genre there's nothing to complain about here as Luka belts out the silliest-named Eurobeat until the next one.

Aeria's Silver (Caz, Luka, Rock)
Eh, gonna go with that unless I get any better ideas for the katakana. Anyhow, jesus christ! I don't remember Caz being quite this amazing? Everything about this track is fantastic, from the rocking music and the absolutely brilliant guitar riffs right down to a clear and crisp Luka who carries the tune expertly.

EASYGOING RIDER (yabuinu, Miku, Chillout Rock)
Exactly as it says on this tin, this rock track shows elements of what I could loosely term the genre 'songs for driving to' through a strong bassline and some great guitar highlights, but these are largely buried behind a head-nodding and very chilled out track. I don't think too much of the music, but the video tipped it over nicely.

Runaway Boys and Lost Girls (cosMo, Gumi, Crazed Pop)
But chilling out just won't do, so let's immediately follow that with the king of scattered, rapid tracks as he gives Gumi a whirl. This is pretty much everything you'd expect from cosMo's lighter tracks - lightning-fast lyrics and piano sections, some bombastic drum solos, a surprisingly well-coded Gumi, and everyone living happily ever after.

Tete-a-Tete (OSTER, Rin, Orchestral Pop)
Oster Project experiments with Rin Append, continuing to place herself firmly in a genre I can only think to call 'provincial South French pop' in as much as it's a certain mix of piano, harpsichord, accordian, and smooth snare drums that immediately conjure up sitting at a cafe on a sunny mediterranean coastline watching thousands of ridiculously gorgeous people sway by. Add in a lovely video and an acoustic solo by Junky, Lord of Guitars.

Committed Girl (kofun, Miku + Luka, Rock)
A solid duet made stronger by a metric fuckton of synth tones and droning basslines. Not the most thrilling song this update, but there's a certain amount of dark tone to the song that helps give it a slightly twisted feel. The title is me taking a whole lot of liberties with puns; if anyone can think of a better way to phrase it, have at it.

Innermost Flowers (sacripant, Kaito + Gakupo + Len, Traditional Rock)
Just in case you were missing the guys this update, here's Vanan'Ice, just in time to be absolutely ~fabulous~. Len's kind of way-up-there in the background, but it works pretty well with the whole mysterious zither style; I have to admit the whole thing makes me grin a little more than it probably should, especially when I get to the title, but there you have it.

DRUGS (PELIE, Miku, Acid Rock)
For the uninitiated, this track might get a little strange in places. PELIE is back with his rather unique trademark style for this bizarre track full of distortions that I think got a little hard done by; Miku sounds pretty strange but that's half the point, and some of the guitars are great. Try not to look too close at the video, mind you.

Skyline (NOFRIE, Miku, Anthem Pop)
So we're all well aware that there's lots of genres I'm weak to. But if anything leads the way, it's got to be this sort of track - anthemic pop full of catches and rising notes, paired off with snatches of piano when it isn't dissolving into clubbish lulls. A great track to go out on.
