Weekly Roundup

Nov 22, 2010 02:52

What a strange week it's been; has everyone been taken over by Vom@s? The vast majority of songs on my shortlist this week haven't reached more than 3,000 views, even the ones I really, really expected to do well. On top of that, the twins very nearly take the update away from Miku for sheer volume of new tracks. Sorry about the tags last week, it completely slipped my mind as I descended into the sort of madness that can only be brought on by a combination of Zettai Hero Project, Star Driver, and Front Mission 3's release on the UK PSN. There has been some not inconsiderable amount of stompy robotting.

Finally, shameless plug: we're nearly at 500 members! To celebrate, I'll be updating our primer posts this week to include all the links you gave us last time and also get our list of singing robots up to date, since we're kind of missing everyone past Lily at the moment. It's cool if I pretend Gachapoid doesn't exist, right? We're also (I THINK? FLOOR? ANYONE?) going to try to get the kanji out of our producer tags. Meanwhile, as reminders, we are always super happy when other people post their own linkdumps, and go join and post at nicospam, our 'general fun Nicovideo crap' sister comm.

Oh, and happy birthday, Haku. I guess.

Cat Food (doriko, Miku, Pop Rock)
The big news this week, of course, is doriko's newest song. An energetic if conventional Vocarock song, I'm a little surprised it got this many hits. It's far from a perfect song, but it's also far from being bad; honestly, my main reason for including it this week is not Miku's fine singing or the track as a whole, so much as Nezu's awesome guitar.

She-Demon (fuamirokku, Rin, Chiptune Rock)
The producer of fine chiptune stylin's BeDash pops back up with a punchy, waily, 8-bit-tastic rock track that slowly ramps its way up to a rapid-fire spectacle. Rin's a bit wobbly but the track's absolutely top-notch and I can't overstate how much I love listening to square waves.

Nape of the Neck (machigerita, Miku, Hammer Horror Rock)
Machige continues to stride ahead in leaps and bounds. Chances are you'll be hooked from the first ten seconds of this track, a full-bodied b-movie intro with wailing guitars and off-key chords that gives way to surprisingly melodic choruses.

Beyond the Door (仕事して, Iroha, Traditional-ish Pop)
Yep. After all the work with Meiko and Kaito, Iroha absolutely shines in shigotoshite's hands and this absolutely gorgeous, primarily vocal track is the result.

Plus Minus (avTechNo, Miku, Rock)
Hmmmmmh. Well, I like it better than most of AvTechNo's recent works, that's for sure, but something still feels a little off. Miku's enough to make me wince on her higher notes, and the two halves of the presumably purposefully schizophrenic song aren't meshed together nearly as well as they should be, which is to say at all. That said, it's worth a go.

Magical Rin ☆☆☆ LOVE ♡ (ugo, Rin, Extremely Cheesy Pop, Ow, What The Fuck)
I can't do it. Even with my tolerance for cheesy-ass pop, this is just way, way too much for me to handle. I'm kind of astounded that it's gotten so high on the charts this week and has garnered so many views. It's an alright video, I guess, but the song isn't anything too special. Nicovideo are you watching this just for the moe? I am suspicious.

Tachycardia (ryuryu, Miku, Orchestral Pop)
A delightfully cute little ditty, the balance on this is pretty wonky but it makes up for it by having so many gorgeous little touches. Kind of an orchestral piece, it's full of snares and twinkly piano and bells, snatches of strings, and somewhere tucked way back in there is Miku crooning like a champion.

Hanged Man and Dream Girl (maigoddo, Rin + Len, Rock)
Washing away the unpleasant taste of Rin's #2 this week, maigoddo rescues us with some more silly MMD rock videos and a lot of tarot imagery. If you've heard any of his stuff before, you know exactly what to expect - driving, hard rock, but this time around there's an almost complete absence of blindfolds.

Songs (tamaa~zu, Miku, Piano + Vocal)
Absolutely fantastic. There's really nothing else that can be said; Miku sounds great and can hold her notes like a pro, the piano's delightful, and that's literally all there is to this simple but powerful track.

Silver Girl - Awaking Mix - (150P, Rin, Rock)
Blimey, there are a lot of reasonably hefty names attached to the credits of this one, and the track shows it well; an energetic and slightly operatic rock track with a lot of violin and some scorching guitar solos, alongside a pretty solid Rin.

I Forgot (co, Miku, Pop Rock)
This is where I get pissy at Nicovideo for not liking the same things I do, this week. Just listen to that intro and the guitar line doesn't make you smile or at least nod along, I will pay you restitution in cold, hard cash to make up for the gaping hole in your heart.

Nonentity Youth (Kazu, Len, Pop)
Surprisingly jumpy and upbeat for a song named after an existential crisis, this is pretty vanilla happy vocaloid jpop, but it coming from Kazu means that it gets to have a solid guitar line and some decent drums behind it too. It's kind of scrappy, lacking some polish on the music, but is perfectly listenable.

Ur-Style -Arbitrary Style- (DATEKEN, Rin, Two-Step)
Ur-Style's not a new song but has always been a fun, bouncy listen, and this recent everything-but-the-kitchen-sink remix from Dateken really reinforces that with all manner of little plinky percussion notes or raindrop tones scattered all across the track.

Spirit and Love (MineK, Gakupo + Meiko, Trance Lounge Jazz Pop)
I really am not sure how to place this, or what exactly to do with it. For most of the track it's a trancey, kind of slow affair with acceptable if kind of wobbly singing, and that's perfectly fine, but then halfway through it just goes all out for a fantastic sax solo.

I'll Do It Tomorrow (akiroo, Luka, Percussion)
A manual for the best of us. Zzz...

promise(カバーアレンジ曲)/初音ミク

let get you/初音ミク(default)

Promise / Horizon / let get you (lamaze, Miku, Pop)
Lamaze has flung a bunch of tracks at nicovideo this past week, and he's always a good bet to go at the end of the post in the 'moe throwaway songs' spot. None of these are tremendously good, but they're enjoyable and serve as a good finale. Horizon is the best of the lot, a straight up pop track. Promise is an arrange of music that will probably be quite familiar to you, and let get you is a chiptuney rock track that takes some time to get going.

Edit:

AGAIN (sososo, Rin, Pop)
sososo steals the post with a fantastic Rin Append song to showcase her Power voicebank. This is pretty great, all told.

Other:

I Had Hatsune Miku Come Out Of The Screen Just A Little (alsione, Miku)
This is what the future has given us: the ability to use the Microsoft Kinect technology to headpat an MMD Miku.

M(El)t Shaddai (chikichuri, Kaito, Cover)
We link because we can.

【MMD】「Yellow」

Yellow (kz, MMDPV by brembo, Miku, Dance Pop)
Yellow's pretty much my favorite Diva2 track, and like most of kz's body of work I could listen to it all day, if I had to. This MMDPV is a reasonably faithful representation of the Diva2 dance for the song - it's no Miracle Paint, but we'll just have to wait for the shadowy cabal of SEGA to go remake it that perfectly for us.
