Since I've been back. . .

Since I've been back at school, I've had to help in the special ed resource room a couple of hours a day. They've hired another para for in there, so I have hopes that I can go back to my kids on Monday. The other day, one of my 4th graders said to Tory, "No offense, but when's Mrs. Durnil coming back???"

I've stomped on kindergartners, one of whom just barely gets the concept that her name is made of letters - I think she was making the volunteer's life problematic - and another one did not ride the bus home yesterday, after the driver put him off and asked for my help. Devin's fatal error was deciding that he could yell on the bus, right after I'd been on the bus and threatened them. That bus is problematic this year.

Ari is getting the full Mrs. Durnil treatment, too. When I walked down to her classroom, Guess Who was sitting in the hall. Why? She decided she didn't want to do the worksheet, so she scribbled on it. She decided that wasn't a good choice and that she needed to apologize to Mrs. L, who kindly let her rejoin the class. Ari also got an earful of, "You're going to have to do things you don't want to all your life. Get started." Yesterday, she heard that she needs to never make it even look like she's responsible for anything going missing. This was a huge problem last year. I even threw the phrase, "Avoid the appearance of evil," at her. We'll see if it sinks in. The child's never had any raisin'. We do what we can at school, but it isn't enough.

I guess I do a lot more at school than I thought. The iron rod of Mrs. Durnil has reappeared. I hate being the heavy. I really do. Dad's Marine Corps genes make it pretty easy to at least make the kids consider their choices. . . most of the time.

I've just finished a Shutterfly book of the Scotland trip. I ordered one for Mom, too. Seemed the least I could do, y'know?
