Okay.... so we all know what X-box Live is right?
For those not on the video game 'grape vine' its an extra you can get for the x-box that allows you to play over the internet with other people. More money can get you a head set so you can talk to them, while riddling them with bullets.
The game of choice is Halo 2, first person shooter where you kill each other for points.
This was a great concept for microsoft to introduce (x-box live, not killingg each othher for points... though that is popular)... fast (no lag), group play on a console based system.
There is however, one delima... and comic in penny arcade (which I'm too lazy to track down right now) describes it perfectly as:
One perfectly normal person + anonimity + an audience = Loud asshole
So I went to my friends house last night... he's all rich and lives up in west Lynn. He of course has x-box and x-box live...
I, not being overly concerned about my online Halo 'cred', immediatly discovered the joys of the above equation.
.........
Things escalated to the point where my friend would hold down The 'talk' button while playing and I would sing full renditions of 'Weird Al'' songs into it.
Understand that the players can to absolute NOTHING about it while playing that doesn't directly inconvience them:
they can a)mute themselves to everyone or b)quit the game.
Most chose just to yell and swear, which did nothing to arrest my solo.
Much mirth all round on our side of the mike.
Even more funny, was their inability to deal with this problem and utter helplessness as they repeatedly (to no avail told us to shut the hell up. The mark of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.
I like to think of this whole little event as me doing my part to get people to spend more time outside.
