I Say Thank You
As of tomorrow, I will have completed the vast majority of my graduate school applications process. In the end, I wound up taking a graduate-level theory class, rehabbing two student loans, finding out I didn't really graduate, and re-registering to complete my coursework.
I also managed to stress myself out, lose a boyfriend, my social life and my libido. I have an eye twitch that hasn't gone away in three weeks, and...I couldn't be happier right now.
I like to think of myself as a Hoss. But how often in life are you really required to show and prove? For me, the answer was Not Much. Coasting was my familiar mode of transport. But this process has Tested My Mettle. And I like what I saw.
I applied to 10 schools: From West Coast to East, they are:
1) University of California- San Diego
2) University of Arizona
3) University of Colorado- Boulder
4) Northwestern
5) The Ohio State University
6) University of Cincinnati (my mama made me do it)
7) Temple
8) Emory
9) Syracuse
10) State University of New York- Stony Brook
So, after tomorrow, it'll be up to God. I've done what I can. But I have so many people to thank for getting me here in one (slightly shaken) piece. And I'm gonna take a few minutes to say "thankee" to them in public.
1) Mama- Dr. Jennifer. Thank you for refusing to let me get downtrodden, for not saying "I told you so," for telling me to relax, for helping me play hooky when I sorely needed it. You rock, and I want to be like you when I grow up. Luckily, I have your genes.
2) Dr. Dave- my friend, mentor, sounding board. Who was busy living his own dream and took time during his dissertation defense and packing to sit me down and tell me the dealy-o. Who introduced me to the faculty and students at UC (well, the cool ones). He has answered my questions patiently and encouraged me to keep going.
3) Hedda- My home skillet who made me laugh during my most serious meltdown. You always rock my world. Thanks for being my Ace.
4) Gina- ah, now I get it. Why did you make this process look so easy? I hate you (with a love tint)!
5) Roz- my bus-buddy and former media adviser, for the recommendation.
6) David- my crush has grown immensely. You're brilliant. Thanks for the recommendation, and the new book.
7) Dr. C.- Thanks. I feel like I've got closure now.
8) Jen- I didn't get it, but now I do. I apologize for being an ass, and thank you for putting up with me.
9) The Pugilist- thanks for making things bearable.
10) Grim- I'm sorry. You did help in a huge way, though.
11) The Staff of Baba Budan's- for the Red Bull, the Milky Ways, the Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, and the occasional salad.
12) Gramma- for the meals. Yum! I love you.
There are prolly many more people to thank, but I have to stop now and go to work. So thank you to those people again- I could not have done it without you.
