This has been one of my favorite EFO songs ever since I first heard it. I don't think it's one of their more popular songs -- it's buried in the middle of their second album, and it wasn't on their live albums -- but I really like it.
I think my very favorite thing about it is the way the lead and backing vocals work in the different verses. The first verse, Julie's lead vocal is "I do thirst / I do crave," then "I have read / I have seen."
Next verse, you get not those words, but just the guys in the band's backing vocals: "the vines of France / the grapes of Spain" and "Virginia Woolf / Virginia g." (No, I don't know what it is either, but that's what the lyric sheet says.)
Last verse, you get them both, a little modified: "I do thirst (the vines of France) / and I do crave (the grapes of Spain)" and "I have read (Virginia Woolf) / I have drank (Virginia g)." (Yes, I know they sing *have drank, but, dude, it rhymes.)
I don't think the lyrics are that great, but I really love how they're staggered like that. It's really cool to know what the the last verse is going to sound like by combining the vocals of the previous verses. Maybe there's a technical term for it.
Anyway. I just thought it was really cool. It's occurred to me every time I've heard the song, which was, oh, junior year of high school. I thought I should post about it sometime.
