We went to see Erin McKeown play in a local park tonight, and, oh, it was goodgoodgood. She is a lot smaller and cuter than one would expect from her voice, and she wore a cute dress. I like her.
She played many many songs, most of which I knew. I think I'd heard all but one of them before, but I couldn't tell you their names. She played a lot of stuff from her newest album, which I don't think is as good, but the singles (or whatever you call what XPN is playing) are catchy. She opened with "Blackbirds," which really rocked. "Fast As I Can," in the middle of the set, gave me goosebumps in the way that good music often does. "James" was really cool. I quite liked "Lullaby in Three/Four," which she ended on.
And! She played "Queen of Quiet," which I really wasn't expecting. Eee eee. She prefaced it by saying how she never played it, and it seemed to take the band a while to catch up, but, yay, good song. I really wish she'd played "Something Comes," as it happens to be my and Jen's official runner-up Song, but she wasn't going to. Oh well.
I bought Jen the Monday Morning Cold album and waited in line to get it signed, because I am willing to go get things signed, which involves talking to people. We told Erin how we liked "Queen of Quiet," without managing to sound like complete idiots, and I think it made Jen happy to get to talk to her, so that is good.
And now we have returned and had white pizza, which I am stocking up on while I am here because there's no way I can get it in CA, is there? Sigh. Also it turns out there are good concerts happening here, like, right after I'm leaving. Sob. Don't make me go. I don't want to leave Jen. I leave next Tuesday. The universe hates me.
