What I Just Finished Reading
Emma Vanderpool, Sacri Pulli: A Tale of War and Chickens: I stole this out of Lysimache's bag before she could take it to school; it is a story for beginning Latin students about the consul Publius Claudius Pulcher and the sacred chickens and it does in fact have several chapters written from the POV of a chicken (whose POV is in all caps, in Papyrus font) and also I now know what noise Roman chickens make ("glocio"). Yes, this is the "if they don't want to eat, then let them drink" guy.
What I'm Reading Now
Comics Wednesday!
Avengers #26: Because apparently Jason Aaron just really, really wants to write a book about cavemen, this comic is about two gay cavemen fighting monsters. Of course, one of them dies! Gosh, what a novel and refreshing plot development for a gay character! As far as I can tell the other one gets angry and becomes Starbrand. He later meets the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, who are perplexed that he is sad. Could we maybe have some Avengers in the Avengers comic? No? Please?
Captain America #16: Steve is hunting Scourge who killed some cops and instead runs into USAgent. Naturally they engage in punching. Apparently it's a big deal because twenty cops are dead. They want to talk to Fisk, but Fisk is dead. This comic is weird and its pacing is weird and none of this is anything I like about Captain America.
Captain Marvel #12: I'm not sure if this is supposed to be Carol or Star (though I am really hoping Star?) because, uh, she just decapitated Thor and brought his head to her villainous boss.
Excalibur #2: Betsy is still Captain Britain, Rogue is in a flower coma, and they're on a boat, fighting selkies. Also maybe Jubilee has a kid? This is what I get for not reading X-Men for years.
Marauders #2: I keep forgetting which X-book is which, but, hey, this is the one where Emma and Kitty are pirates. Anyway, this is Emma playing politics with Sebastian Shaw after Kitty sank a boat which was being hijacked unsuccessfully by Batroc? I guess? And Kitty is apparently the Red Queen. I did not know we could say the word "bitch" in a comic book.
Strikeforce #3: Billy is captured and stuck in a room with Doom, also captured. There is an interlude with some... elves? The Strikeforce people are trying to come up with a plan, which I guess involves them being in Indonesia. Which I guess is where they all are anyway, and it turns out the Doom was a Doombot, and there's a lot of punching but it's all really charming because this comic is great. A+! Read it!
Tony Stark Iron Man #18: Tony is still fused with his armor and Rhodey is still experiencing some kind of psychological crisis about having to be War Machine. Somehow Vision and Simon got separated when I wasn't looking, everyone punches Hank-Ultron for a bit, and it's time to shrink down and help Tony from the inside. Ah, comics. Now Jan and Tony are punching Hank inside Tony. This is so dumb. Also Arno has brought clones of Howard and Maria to life, with all their memories, which is apparently the same process that gave Tony his current body, because he sees a bar code inside himself. Anyway, he's fine now, Jocasta is somehow in a body that should have been Friday's, and Tony is suiting up in ye olde classic Model IV. But I guess now that we know his body is manufactured we're gonna have some ridiculous angst and/or arguing that it isn't him despite the fact that everyone in the Marvel Universe got resurrected in, like, 2015.
What I'm Reading Next
Still making my way through that Laura Ingalls Wilder biography.
