So I was randomly reading a non-fiction academic book about sexuality in America, you know, like you do -- D'Emilio & Freedman's Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America -- and I am still at the beginning, about the Puritans.

So far I have learned that the Puritans believed that, uh, when you committed bestiality the possibility existed that you could impregnate the animal and it could birth hideous animal-human hybrid monsters and so therefore if you were convicted of bestiality they put the animal to death first, while you watched, so that it couldn't possibly give birth to hideous monsters. There is an anecdote about one guy who was forced to pick his, uh, partner out of a sheep lineup. They then slaughtered the sheep and hanged him.

It had never occurred to me that people were so sure that having sex with their farm animals would lead to potential offspring that they would take steps to prevent that. I don't know why, but I just find this odd and I wanted to share.
