In which my subconscious is cleverer than the rest of my brain

Okay, so, I am in the process of rereading and writing up a post about Frontier Wolf. For Kink Bingo last year I wrote a slash story (A Swift Fierce Pleasure) about Bericus, a minor character (one of the Frontier Wolves) and one of his fellow soldiers, whom I thought was an OC. I named the guy Vedrix. Random British names, blah blah blah, ends in -rix, good to go.

So I'm reading Frontier Wolf... and Vedrix, it turns out, is not an OC:

"There, we detach ten men for a decoy party, under Optio Vedrix," he glanced at a small foxy-looking man who nodded in reply.

I have absolutely no memory of this character! None at all! But apparently he is a real character! His name appears five times total (it also turns out he has a knack for scenting when it's going to snow), but he's there! Small, foxy, and in one scene, grinning. So I flip back to check my story to see what I said about him. I have described Vedrix as "small and crafty, with a sharp smile." I mean, I also invented some backstory for him and gave him a badass facial scar, but I feel that's reasonable.

WTF. HOW DID MY BRAIN DO THIS?

You might say, ha, well, the story depicts him joining the Wolves as an ordinary soldier and in canon he's an optio. Apparently I also accounted for this, by setting the story pre-canon, when Gavros was still in command, thus giving Vedrix an unspecified amount of time to be promoted. I thought of everything! And I didn't even know I was thinking of it!

My unconscious memory is apparently a thing of wonder.

(I got me a FW icon! Whoop whoop! I would like to thank
motetus for arting and
carmarthen for cropping.)
