I have a couple more chapters to go in The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells, but I feel confident in reccing it to you fannishly-minded fantasy readers. Let's just say I'm not surprised that the author apparently has some involvement in fandom (and also writes SGA profic). I forget where I heard of this -- maybe it was a Yuletide nomination? -- but the book was free for Kindle a while back. (If you didn't pick it up then, I recommend getting it from
Baen, since they're a few dollars cheaper and also DRM-free. No, I don't know why Baen handles all of Night Shade Press' ebooks either, but I'm not complaining.)
And why should you read this, my friends? Wingfic. That is right! Glorious, glorious secondary-world fantasy with wings! Come on, you know you love it.
(I have lately been posting book reviews to
my Goodreads account, but I am not sure "omg wingfic!!!111" is really the kind of review that, um, flies, shall we say, in non-fannish spaces.)
Wells' style in general feels very fannish to me, or at least the kind of fantasy that I know fandom likes. Very clear and uncomplicated, but with well-drawn characters, interesting world-building, and a good but not too demanding plot. It's a little like Lackey but without the gang rape. That kind of style. I guess I mean "idficcy."
And if you like it, there's a sequel, The Serpent Sea. Hooray! I think I'll be reading that next.
