thursday

The first time he notices Woohyun (really notices, because even though they share a room and the ability to sing, Woohyun is no more than a name attached to a face - it’s not easy to make friends when you know they might not be here tomorrow, or worse: take your place in the group) is on a Thursday.

“Hey, do you want to go out? Karaoke?”

Sunggyu’s throat is raw; they’ve both been assigned to the same vocal block this week and they’ve just spent five hours in the studio. Their vocal coach beamed and called it Good teamwork but from the way he struggles to swallow now, Sunggyu thinks it was more of a race. He’s just not sure who came in first, or if there was a winner. “We won’t make it back in time before curfew,” Sunggyu says, looking up from his lap at Woohyun, who is sitting on the floor. Woohyun’s socks gleam an unnatural white in their dim room. “And we’ve just spent half our day singing.”

“People like doing what they’re good at, right?” he says and grins at him and it takes Sunggyu a few moments to process that it’s meant to be a compliment. “I’ve made a deal with the managers - we’ll get until ten tonight.”

Sunggyu just sits there on the thin mattress, his mouth opened for a retort but Woohyun stands before he can find the words, wraps his fingers around Sunggyu’s wrist and pulls him to his feet. His fingers are cold. “I know it’s a stupid idea,” he says, the excitement concealed well under his calm voice. He has a smile playing at his lips again, and Sunggyu recalls Woohyun during the brief breaks they get, in between lessons and practices, or during breakfast: the boy who smiles a little too brightly and speaks a little too loudly.

“Yes,” Sunggyu rasps, because his throat aches and Woohyun’s fingers are biting into his skin, tight enough to be uncomfortable and he doesn’t even know Woohyun’s surname, let alone know him well enough to sneak out of the dorm for something as trivial as ‘having fun’.

“You can trust me.”

“I--” Sunggyu starts but Woohyun is already turning out the door with Sunggyu in tow and Sunggyu is trying to keep up him and as they run down the darkened streets hand-in-hand, their flimsy shoes pounding on asphalt, Woohyun repeats again, No, really!, and Sunggyu swallows.

No one has ever done anything as stupid as trust him before.

Woohyun’s surname is ‘Nam’ and he still sings loudly in the karaoke room, louder than all the backtracks and Woohyun leans into him repeatedly (exactly four times), sweaty and flushed with exhilaration.

Sunggyu notices his attention is centered more around the curve of Woohyun’s fingers around the mic and the way he licks his lips after certain words rather than the notes he’s supposed to be hitting.

-And he is supposed to trust this boy?

They debut on a Thursday, more than a year after That Thursday.

Sunggyu watches Woohyun sing his parts, over and over again as he paces in a tight circle, and the seconds trickle past, Sunggyu’s gaze just trails Woohyun as he fiddles absentmindedly with the mic strapped onto his face.

“Woohyun.”

Woohyun stops.

“We’ll do fine. Don’t worry.” Sunggyu knows he's supposed to add in something about ‘trust’ and ‘teamwork’ and ‘I think I’m in love you, ever since that Thursday’, but the music outside dims and they’ve run out of time. The last part is a terrible idea, anyway.

Hours later: “I can’t believe I had a wardrobe malfunction on our debut stage.” Woohyun buries his face into the pillow and groans.

“It did go well, other than that. We’ll do better.”

Woohyun’s words are muffled, and Sunggyu has to move in closer. “And you said to trust you but I still messed up-”

“Woohyun.”

“Everyone’s going to remember me as the member with the the ugly pants that split-”

“Woohyun.”

“I guess I could join culinary school. I’ll only be compared to my brother, not you or Myungsoo or all the other idols out there-”

“Woohyun,” Sunggyu says, pushing Woohyun over so he rolls off the mattress. It’s a brief drop and their costume clothes that litter the floor has cushioned the fall, but that is enough to shock him into silence. “Don’t do that to yourself.”

Woohyun blinks up at him, mouth opening and closing but there are no words.

Sunggyu leans lower, so his face is directly above Woohyun’s. “I trust you, okay? And you’re going to do more than just fine. We have years to perfect this, after all.”

His mouth is closed now but he’s still blinking at Sunggyu, as though he does not understand. Sunggyu moves a little closer.

He does not tell Woohyun what he’s been trying to formulate into coherent thoughts ever since they’ve become friends because while he is a singer, he’s never been good with words. I love yous are too sappy and he has already said he trusts Woohyun, so all he can do is close the distance between himself and Woohyun.

The angle is awkward but he can feel Woohyun press back into the kiss, tongue soft, and Sunggyu backs away abruptly.

“What-” Woohyun sounds breathless. Sunggyu does not think Woohyun could ever sound this way.

“Hey, do you want to go out? Karaoke?" Sunggyu tries for blasé but it comes out shakier and rougher and most tellingly, more out of breath than he would care to admit. He wonders if Woohyun remembers.

“…We have Music Bank tomorrow.” Apparently not, but then Woohyun smiles, the first time today. "But I think I know what you just tried to do there."

“Fine, we can just stay here,” Sunggyu says, clutching a fistful of Woohyun’s shirt and pulling him in once more.
