This morning, as I finished my repast of popcorn chicken and tortilla chips, I happened to look out the window. It's not something I typically would do at 5am -- at 5am, the only thing the outside world can tell you is that you're up Too Damn Late. Also, it will tell you that there are many birds outside, and that birds can only define their territory, argue their arguments, pursue mates and locate food by being horribly noisy. All valuable information, really.

Anyways, I look out the window expecting to find rosy-fingered dawn doing her thing, and all I see is a light in the clouds, seeming to come from near the center of the sky through the clouds. I later realized that I was just seeing some higher clouds being illuminated by a sun tucked amongst further storm clouds, but at the time?

For about five seconds there, until mainline reality swept in and corrected me, there was a giant asteroid glowing through the atmosphere. I really don't think I've felt that kind of bottom-dropping-out fear since.. well.. fuck, I've never been convinced of death by astral body before.

I got about as far as wondering if I should bother waking people up before I realized some damp cumulus had utterly had one over on me.

You win this time, Nature. But keep this shit up and we may not be so hesitant next time we consider finishing the job and paving the last of you.
