Music is the Universal Language

In honor of Universal Music Day, I'm listening to bagpipes. Amazing Grace is playing currently. It reminded me of this:

Just over ten years ago, I was a waitress at a strip club. I'd wrecked my car, so I'd walk to work. The short journey would take me past some interesting parts of town, including a church. The one on Broadway and Central, for those of you familiar with Burque.

One particularly cold day, I heard singing as I headed toward that corner. The voice was enchanting, so rather than turn right as per usual, I went straight at the intersection. And there he was, homeless, probably more than a little insane, and bundled among what I'm guessing is everything he owned in the world on the steps of the church, singing away.

Time stopped in that moment. I didn't hear cars passing or notice people walking by, just him, singing with everything in his soul toward some savior - his Amazing Grace.

Every time I hear the song, it brings me back to those few moments and my emotions run away with me a bit. He was dirty and wandered the streets, but I wouldn't say he was lost. And in those moments, he was beautiful.
