My vacation on Craphole Island --> 23.07 - 30.07.2008

Jul 31, 2008 21:24

So, here's the story. May sound harsh, maybe even I will think so later, but right now, in this moment, I gotta do this that way ^-^ It's really pretty long. You better sit down.

Well....
We were living for one week in a hotel on Crete, in a dull village named "Georgioupolis". Our hotel was called, ironically enough, "Happy Days". By just hearing that you'd think we were off to a great start.

Yeah, you'd think!

The flight was, despite the time (6:30 a.m.), pretty much fun. I've never been on a plane before, so I was excited.. and, of course, scared. But I always am. The food they served on board was pretty neat. Though I didnt eat much of it. And later the day I wished I did. For obvious reasons I'm gonna tell later in the story.

As we landed we could hardly believe how hot it was. Okay, Greece is supposed to be hot, but it still caught us by surprise... since we got to the airport in the middle of the night, we dressed accordingly: long trousers, jackets and all that stuff.
From there, everything went as planned. I couldnt believe how easy this was going.
We got into the bus. The ride went for approximately 2 hours. Wasnt this taxing. I listened to music and admired the view (ocean looked awesome!).
As we got to the hotel, me and my friend thought: hey, great! Looks lovely!

Yeah, sadly it looked like a dungeon from inside. Maybe it used to be one.. who knows.

So, the seven-days-nightmare started.

And before I forget to mention: my friend doesnt speak the slightest English. So, I did all the work. Ugh. I felt like I was babysitting her. And we argued a lot in that week. May sound funny, but she was the one with the mood swings, not me. I hated it!

As we checked in, the woman behind the counter looked like she was forced to being here.
She got us our first room, No. 116 - Yeah, you heard right. Our first room! Wait, it's getting better.

She walked us to the room. And gave me instructions in the worst English accent ever. I had to ask thrice (!), cause I didnt unterstand a word she was saying. She mumbled something about putting the key-thingy into a gadget by the door; it's for the electricity.... pff. We didnt even have electricity just like that.... - that was my first WTF-Moment on that vacation.

From there I wondered, why the heck this house derseves to be called "Hotel".

As we carried our luggage up the stairs we found our room. Hmm. It wasnt even ready yet. The cleaning lady was still there. So we waited like 10 minutes in the heat. Awesome. *eyeroll*
When she left, I finally got the first good look of the room. And OMG! I was shocked to my very core! This soo didnt look like it was supposed to be. In the catalogues we saw a completely different one. We stepped closer and were speechless. Really.
The "bathroom" was a joke! The entire room smelled like butt! We couldnt take it anymore and stormed out. I talked to the receptionist from before and said that we felt like we were being put on.
She was somewhat irritated and said we can have another room: No. 913. On the second floor.
We checked it out. Nah, didnt look much better, but at least it was something. So we switched the rooms. They really should've called this sodding hotel "Crappy Days".

We were soo depressed. The day just wouldnt end. It felt like eternity, though we were even one hour forward. We only slept 2 hours the night of the take off. Maybe thats why we felt like shit.
The food was gross! We were starving since we had so little to eat that day. We had "all inclusive" but we didnt feel like taking advantage of it. But thank heavens the food got better in the following days. Though I hardly ate anything and nothing special. Salad and potatoes for most of the time. I lost 2 kilograms, btw.

The second day we tried to figure out how to get the heck out of this country. We really made plans; and I thought we were gonna stick to them. But no! I travelled with the only friend of mine, who can make me go mad from zero to hundred. Geez. I so wanted to slap (sorry!) her for most of the time. These mood swings of her kept ticking me off.
The next 2 days we travelled around the island. I've never been this bored on a vacation. Oh my.
There were times, I thought I was being a member of LOST! It all looked soo similiar. I, too, had the famous "Island fever". I wanted to go home so badly. ^-^

There were good times, though. We played games right before we went to bed. Such as "Mensch ärgere dich nicht" and "Kniffel". We laughed a lot in those nights. But that isnt enough to be having a great week. At least not for me.
We had a pool outside of the hotel. That was the only great thing about it. It was empty for most of the time... now that was awesome. And the fact that I got tanned. Finally. Beach was great too, the ocean is despite this place beautiful to watch.
Oh, one more thing: the really one good thing that came out of is, that I had independency. I was practically on my own since my friend doesnt speak English. I talked in the right language (English) but was in the wrong country (Greece). But I'm feeling like I've grown. I had an obstacle and learned from it. Love it.

My friend discovered a puddle on Sunday. And no, not in the bathroom. In the master room, with the beds and stuff. It must have come out of the walls, I thought. Another WTF-Moment for me.
I told a hotel clerk about this, she came up to the room, was shocked, said they were gonna deal with it the next day, apologized, and left. She looked reliable to me.

I was wrong.

Nothing was done the following day. Didnt really surprise me. As I complained, again, to someone else this time, a man came to the room a day later. He didnt really speak English so he couldnt understand what I was telling him. Oh golly!
He had no clue whatsoever about the river (!) building up in our room and said we should switch it. But why should we be moving out when we were gonna leave the next day anyway, we thought.

We were soo giddy about leaving this place. Usually it should be the other way around when being on holidays. We counted the hours.

We had to leave the room by 12 p.m. on Wednesday. But had to wait 5 more hours for the bus which would bring us to the airport. Crap!
I was almost falling asleep on the couch in the waiting area downstairs. My friend watched TV whilst I read my book and listened to music. Later we went down to the beach for the very last time.
Finally, the time reached its point to 5:20 p.m. We said our goodbyes and got the hell out of there. The ride took about 2 hours.

The airport in Heraklion was soo crazy organized, I thought I was gonna get a headache (which I got later, but due to dehydration --- I only know the medical term, thanks Jack ^^)
I couldnt wait to land in Frankfurt/Main were everything is truly taken care of.
Germany, I missed you and your organisation talent. ;)

So the flight back was awesome. The dinner was delicious. The best thing I ate in the whole week! Yummy!
And I got to sit by the window, wohoo. You could see Athens by night. Beautiful.

So we landed, got picked up by my friend's godmother and she drove me home. I arrived at 1 a.m. I was tired but couldnt sleep for hours.

And yeah, now I'm enjoying my freedom. I'm alone at home. My parents and my brother wont be home for another 2 days. My sister will be coming next week.
Scary to be home alone in the night, but I'm sleeping with a baseball bat in my bed ^-^ no kidding. Makes me feel lot safer.

Okay, end of story. I've been writing here for over an hour now. I need to rest.

Hope you enjoyed reading it. Though it's very long.
