"You're a genius, kid. An absolute genius."
Wallace shook his head at those words. Hadn't Purvis just accused him of not being a team player?
Well, now he'd made the grade. He'd proven that he was a team player after all, but something kept nagging at his mind.
'Genius.' Hadn't that word meant something once?
He felt certain that it had.
His hands moved of their own will, without a thought, tearing the admired painting in two and letting the halves slip to the floor. Then turning, amid cursing and taunts, he strode to the door. There'd be other chances. Other opportunities. At worst he could go back to being a short order cook. He'd been above average at that as well.

The wind rises, gusty, and the night is cool. You can almost feel a storm coming, by the way the hairs on your neck and arms tingle with electricity. A small lizard scampers across the road, taking cover under a hot dog vendor's cart, as though he knows what's coming. It all brings a sense of foreboding. A good night to get out of this seedy town. A good night to clear your head and drive.
That's the thought as Wallace rounds the corner of the building, stepping into the alley where he'd parked his convertible.
But they say that, 'If you turn the right corner in Sin City, you can find anything.' Looks like Wallace will come to believe that sooner than he could expect.
My car. Where is it? ". . .Where am I, for that matter?"
There are a lot of shoddy, run down parts of Basin City. Wallace had seen clients in more than a few of them, but this was new.
And what's more unnerving, his car, and even the buildings are not where he'd left them, or even whole.
It's still dark, but the cloud cover has changed and the streets seem empty. Quiet- too quiet.
It's almost as if the city had gone to hell- the rest of the way- since he'd been with Purvis, and now he doesn't recognize a bit of it.
Silently, Wallace takes a few more steps, watching for any sign of life about.
Relax. Focus. You can figure this out.
