SiM Fic: Untitled #4 [Simple Things]

Title: Untitled #4
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: James/Lily, sort of. Very sort of. It's more like James stalking Lily.
Summary: James is not a stalker.
Author's Notes: Another terrible story, yeah baby! Also, I hate titling things, obviously. Three or four minutes over the time limit, not that it really benefited from them.

Lily Evans gives no one enough credit, James thinks. She’s always going on about how people are too irreverent or rude or immature or insufferable to properly appreciate them - Sirius, for all his lack of knowledge about girls, shrewdly says that she keeps on missing the important things because she’s too caught up with appearances.

James, he made an abysmal first impression seven years ago and not even Dumbledore entrusting him the Head-Boy badge made Lily reconsider. He was hoping she’d realize that there must be some good thing in him, clearly, if Dumbledore thinks he’s fit enough to be a model for the whole school (Lily, she thinks Dumbledore is a crazy old man who’s clearly bent on making her life impossible, because why else would anyone appoint James Potter Head Boy, Professor McGonagall, and is there really nothing we can do to give the badge to someone more reasonable, I mean, really, even Severus Snape would’ve been a better choice), but alas (“woe, melodrama, angst, tragedy, death, misery, et cetera” as Sirius would say), no luck. James Potter is an insufferable prat and Lily Evans insists on not looking any deeper or longer than strictly necessary.

James doesn’t want to get Lily to notice him, because obviously she already does. He’s more interested in getting to the point where she no longer grimaces every time they have to do something together or hold a meeting with the rest of the school’s prefects or really, just accidentally cross glances with one another in class. But since it doesn’t look like that is going to happen any time soon, not if Lily has any say about it, he has to content himself with watching.

So he watches, with a strange fondness that may even border on something like tenderness, as Lily reads letters from her mother, watches the way she tries to write a letter to her sister in the common room and can’t find the words to say anything (Sirius is ruthless in his mockery of his lovelorn attitude, tells him it’s stalkerish and hell, since it’s getting him nowhere he may as well stop being repulsive and instead go back to being his normal self, because the Marauders would certainly appreciate it if Prongs would stop being a girl. Remus says that maybe it’s something to do with being an Animagus, and isn’t it the deer mating season anyhow?)

Every morning, during breakfast, James knows that Lily reads the Daily Prophet’s headlines over her friend’s shoulder, and he knows that there have been more Muggles found dead with the Dark Mark hovering over their heads because whenever this happens, Lily chews on the tips of her hair, concernedly. It's rather a tell-tale action.

Seeing her, it makes James sigh, although he's not quite sure if it's because he too is frightened that some day it'll be Lily's parents on the front page, or simply because he's in love with her.
