frustating dreams
so last night or early this morning i had a dream i was john kerrys wife (wel i was me but we were married, i wasn't actually his portly mrs). we were on the campaign trail and had stopped at a high school somewhere on what had to be a middle america state. An olf friend of his was the principal and was so excited to see us and for us to meet the students. we went into this one room and while I guess I expected most kids to cheer, most just looked as us and gave us half assed smiles. Don't get me wrong, some did cheer but it was really lack luster. I then heard this voice say 'Vote Bush!' and I turned around and it was this fat blonde student who sort of looked like a 4 year old but just made a lot bigger, with rosy cheeks and sort of dopey eyes. I quickly went ovet o her and asked why? what is it about bush that makes you want to vote for him? and all she said was 'because of the way he is, the way he looks'. and i was totally shocked by this answer and went on to tell her something that I (in real life, not the dream) had heard bill clinton say at the philly rally for Kerry that was shown on the BBC the night before. I cant remember it word for word now but it was about choosing someone who wanted you to think and hope over someone who came at you with a handful of fear. I dont really remember her reaction bt it wasn't good. I woke up and i remembered that her saying she'd vote bush for the way he looked also came from something i saw on the news. the bbc has been going around states like ohio and florida, asking people who and why theyd vote for. this one firefighter in some small town in ohio was saying he'd vote for bush bcause " he looks like someone who would eat a chilidog." WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?YOU REALLY BASE YOUR FUTURE PRESIDENT ON WHETHER OR NOT HE'D EAT A CHILIDOG? how fucking ludicrous is that?
what is getting to me, now more than ever in this campaign is how so many peoples votes will be based not thru educating themselves with all the free information on the web or in the news but on apperances and ideas of what they think the president is like or should be like. Bush ticks all the right boxes in some peoples minds: souther accent (check), strong, steadfast appraoch even when its total shit and failing (check), cowboy hat even though he went to private school and pobably never did any ranch hand work in his life (check)...i mean please. its so awful it makes my stomach fill up with knots. watching the campaign trail on british tv is really a godsend. its scary but its the most truthful approach to following a presidential election that any i have sen in america.
you have bush arriving via helicopter to the theme of fucking Top Gun, saying the same drible to every fucking idiot who comes out to hear him speak..'We are on a long tough journey, we are strong and holding ground, we continue to protect america from the terrorists'. can the man say anything else? what about healthcare and children and the enviornment? what about the deficit and everything else? this isnt fucking top gun its real life.
