“I promise I will love you forever”
Are the words my father said
Then I knew he was the greatest father in the world
As he tucked me into bed

I was a seven-year-old girl
When I closed my eyes and began to dream
Knowing I had to perfect family
And to everyone that’s how it seemed

The greatest father in the world
Taught me how to ride a bike
He helped me with my homework
And did all the things I like

The greatest father in the world
Woke early every day
He worked hard to support his family
And promised he would always stay

Many tragedies befell him
But Daddy remained strong
And even when he got discouraged
He never stayed that way for long

The greatest father in the world
Was always there for the good times and the bad
He was always there to make me smile
And to make sure I was never sad

He bought me my first set of roller blades
And picked me up each time I fell
He helped me trick my brother
Swearing he would never tell

The greatest father in the world
Grew up without many things in life
But he grew up to have much more than in the past
He had a family and a wife

He’s the greatest father in the world
Because he’s been there for the important things to me
He’s the greatest father in the world
And I’m sure that’s what he’ll always be

Now I wake up from this dream
And I’m a seventeen year old
Where my father’s been all these years
I’ve never really been told

I’m not going to say he’s an absent man
Because he’s always come and gone
I’m sure he could have been the greatest
If he’d only stuck around

When my father said he’d never leave
His heart must not have been pure
Because my Daddy left again last night
And I know this time its for sure
