Since Douglas Adams' "Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" will soon be made to a major
film, me and my flatmate Ulla were pondering the perfect cast the other night.
Adams himself when still alive and working on the script wanted Hugh Grant to play the leading man, Arthur Dent, but since that was about ten years ago I reckon the otherwise quite good choice might already passed his "birthday cake" age in this production and therefore the perfect Dent would be someone a bit younger. I would like to see for example Christian Bale as Arthur Dent, even though I haven't seen any real comedies from him, I think American Psycho proved he's got quite a sarcastic sense of humour. Alan Cumming would make a great camp Zaphod Beeblebrox (plus imagine him with an extra head!) and Ewan McGregor would be just perfect as the bohemian Ford Prefect. The right choice for Trillian is more difficult, but at the moment my favourites to play her would be either Shirley Henderson or Sally Philips, who both have shown their great comedienne sides in "Bridget Jones' Diary" for example.
When concidering todays old and new Hollywood stars, the most logical cast would be Orlando Bloom as Dent (just think of his blank "when? why? where? who the ---- am I after all?" stare...), Johnny Depp as Beeblebrox, Keira Knightley as Trillian (why does this suddenly sound like another sequel of "Pirates of Caribbean"...) and someone like Dominic Monaghan as Ford.
The ideal director for the movies would be Tim Burton, but of course since today's magic word in the world of cinema is trilogy, there would also be at least three parts for this series. Ulla suggested that each part would be directed different director, so my favourites here would be Tim Burton for the first one, Terry Gilliam for the second and Baz Luhrman for the final part (just imagine Trillian and Arthur floating in the air to somekind of ponsy musical music with lots of glitter falling on and around them and that "L'amour" sign somewhere there as well...).
And for some reason I always imagined Marvin very square. As in square shaped. (He is quite boring for a paranoid android anyway in all his melancholy...)
