The meaning of life, conciousness, and the soul; a look inside my head

Today was the first day of school, which was great. I love middle college because they kind of ease you into the routine of school; this week I have classes from 9-12, and we don't do much actual work in them ( Read more... )

I like.

One thing to consider is that self-awareness stems from our ability to see ourselves as others see us. George Herbert Mead called this the "looking glass self." Is is questionable whether someone who lived all her life in solitude would look at herself in a similar fasion, being conscious of all of her thoughts/etc. I don't have an answer for this, though it might be out there.

I am of the opinion that, if anything, the soul is a function of the ability of the parts of our brain to interact with each other in a way that makes them a)function with each other and b)unique. It still is pretty remarkable.

I spent some time pondering some theological questions yesterday, based on the "over 300 proofs of God's existence" thing that I believe you sent me and subsequent articles. I am of the opinion that theology and science cannot co-exist. Either all of our reasoning is wrong and science is useless, and God did it all; or there is no God, which brings up a whole number of other questions. I think it is perfectly reasonable to assume that all of the things we have "proved" through science could be entirely wrong: if God created this world and its rules it makes sense that they would be consistent. Who knows. The whole question is so immense that its difficult to even start picking apart.

Just some thoughts.

I think I'll stay, by the way.
