Mary waved her daughter's dance classmates into the house after their recital. "Hello, girls. Don't you all look lovely tonight. Eden, make sure to keep your shoulders back. See, look at how straight Isabella's spine is. You should try to make your posture more like hers."

Isabella forced herself not to grin at the compliment, instead smiling politely. "Thank you, Mrs. Devereaux. That's kind of you to say."

"It's also kind of her not to mention how fat she is," Sarah Jane muttered to Mercedes, who snickered in response.

Mary took in Aurora and Giselle, who still wore their tutus and leotards. "You two were particularly good tonight. Eden could learn a lot from your work en pointe."

"We do have a lot of practice," Aurora said, smoothing her hair under her tiara.

"And Jenny, you did such an amazing job as the lead in tonight's performance. Your Clara was simply inspired," Mary gushed. "Hopefully Eden will someday have the skill and dedication to play a role to such perfection."

"Well, dancing is my life," Jenny said, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear and smoothing her plaid skirt visibly pleased at the praise.

"Eden, why don't you show your friends to your room?" Mary suggested. The horde of girls headed for the stairs. "And remember to tread lightly on the stairs!" she chirped. "You are young ladies, not elephants!"

"Wow, is it just me or is Eden's mom sort of a bitch?" Fantasy quietly asked Becca.

Becca's sister Bee, who'd overheard, said, "No, she registers pretty high on the Bitch-O-Meter. She's totally fake-nice."

Fantasy's sister Anime deliberately stomped her feet down on the stairs. When Isabella turned to glare at her, she stuck her arm in front of her nose and waved it up and down like an elephant's trunk.

"You are so weird," Mercedes said to Anime with a dismissive toss of her head.

"Better weird than a bitch," Anime replied.

Mercedes glared, but held her tongue.

Eden pushed open the door to her room. "This is it." She brushed a lock of hair out of her eyes, and it promptly fell right back to where it had been.

Becca looked around the neat-as-a-pin room. She could have bounced a quarter off the duvet. "Are you sure you're a teenager? I mean, Bee and I like things neat, and Dad comes in and cleans, like, every day, but our room looks lived-in, at least." She giggled. "Mostly because he draws the line at picking up girl-type underwear."

"Ladies keep their possessions tidy," Eden said, obviously quoting something her mother had said. "Cleanliness is a virtue. Young women must be neat. Everything in its place." She wrinkled her nose and smiled to take the sting out of the words she clearly did not believe.

"I am so glad our mother wasn't like that," Anime said.

"You don't have a mother," Mercedes sneered.

"Exactly," Anime shot back.

"How about we all get changed into our pajamas?" Eden said, trying to defuse the tension.

The girls all dived into their bags and dug out various sweat pants and flannel pajamas. Isabella and Sarah Jane left to find bathrooms in which to change, while Anime and Fantasy just started stripping, stepping away from the windows. Bee and Becca changed into tank tops and boxers; Jenny's pajama bottoms were plaid, of course, and she pulled on a pair of fuzzy socks. Aurora and Giselle tucked their tiaras into their bags.

When they were all assembled back in the room, Isabella looked around. "Is there tea and biscuits?"

"Are you sure you really need them?" Mercedes asked, utterly catty, looking at Isabella's waistline.

"I'll see what we have," Eden said.

"I'll go help you carry up the snacks," Jenny offered, getting up from the edge of the bed.

Before Eden made it to the door, Mary's voice echoed down the hall. "Is there anything you girls would like? Tea, perhaps? A glass of milk?"

"Do you have any pop?" Fantasy called.

"No, dear, no, we do not," Mary replied. "We do not have such things in this household,"

"Well, that sucks," Fantasy said, frowning. "I guess we'll have tea."

"So what do you all want to do?" Becca asked, stripping off her makeup at the dressing table.

"I want to do someone's hair," Mercedes said. "Giselle, come here." She sat on the bed and Giselle sat at her feet leaning back against the bed.

"We should tell fortunes," Sarah Jane said, pulling a deck of tarot cards out of her bag.

"That sounds fun!" Aurora said, sitting on the floor in front of Sarah Jane and shuffling the tarot deck. "Do me first!"

Sarah Jane laid out the cards. "I see two dark men in your future. One is dark and handsome. The other is dark in other ways. Dim, perhaps."

Everyone laughed.

Jenny plopped down next to Aurora. "Oh, do me!"

"Very interesting," Sarah Jane said as she spread out the cards. "I see a dashing man in uniform, and a lot of time in the spotlight."

"That's a good fortune!" Fantasy said. "Cute boy in uniform and fame!" She shuffled the deck.

Sarah Jane laid out the cards. "I see bitterness and disappointment," She said. "And dying unloved."

"What? That's not a good fortune!" Fantasy snapped.

Sarah Jane indicated the cards. "Are you going to argue with the Devil and the Tower? I didn't think so."

Irritated, Fantasy grabbed Aurora and Jenny grabbed Anime and they went off to do each other's hair.

Becca picked up the cards and shuffled. "What do you see for me?"

Sarah Jane examined the spread in front of her. "I see a lot of gentleman callers and public indecency."

"Yes!" Becca said with a celebratory fist-pump. The girls all giggled, some of them scandalized.

"Now me!" Isabella demanded.

"I see a great deal of strife, and a red-haired man who will come in and sweep you off your feet," Sarah Jane said, consulting the cards.

"I could do without the strife," Isabella said, "but I will certainly not refuse a red-haired man."

Eden shuffled for herself. "What about me?"

Sarah Jane spread the cards out, and it was a very familiar pattern. "I see strife, and a red-haired man."

"That's not particularly original," Bee said. "Didn't we just hear that?"

"Maybe it's the same guy!" Mercedes crowed. The girls all giggled, with one exception.

"Ugh, no!" Isabella scoffed with a roll of her eyes. "Eden and I do not have the same taste in men!"

Eden shrugged.

"So what now?" Giselle asked, her hair now in a tight French braid.

"We could watch a movie," Jenny said.

"Too bad that book Dusk isn't a movie," Eden said. "I love that book. It's my favorite!"

"Ooh, how about Labyrinth?" Bee suggested. "David Bowie in tight pants!"

"Yes!" Becca agreed immediately. "There must be tight pants." The girls all giggled and settled themselves around the room to better see the TV.

"It was such a good idea to have a slumber party!" Jenny said. "This is so much fun!"
