Veda: Hollywood BACC Week 1 Summers
Minor edits for clarity.
Hello! Welcome back to the tiny town of Veda. We’re at our second house with the Summers brothers. David and Samuel. David has been responsible for his younger brother since their parents’ deaths. David has always wanted to be an architect and now has his chance. Samuel wants to be a Captain Hero, but also is taking a stab at getting electricity for Veda.
“Isn’t that Amber lady planting a garden?” Samuel asked.
“Yeah, but it’s always good to have a fail safe.”
Samuel nodded, but internally rolled his eyes. David always had a fail safe. He wondered what the fail safe was if Veda was a failed venture.
Samuel sat down and started his work. This was his chance as much as his older brother’s. Back home he had been in a lot trouble. Stealing, sneaking out, and skipping school. He partially blamed himself for David wanting to move out into the middle of nowhere.
David checked the paper hoping for an opening as an architect. He had seen a firm in the nearby Pine Grove. If he had any luck, they would have an opening.
Darkness fell. David could hardly contain his excitement. Joyce had gotten him a telescope. He couldn’t wait to finally use it.
In the wee hours of the morning David tore himself away from the telescope and headed to bed.
Samuel sat on the bench blinking in the bright sunlight. David had kept him awake late by muttering into the telescope. He hadn’t seen his brother so excited.
David yawned too through his early morning chores. Including looking for a job opening. Still nothing. He was beginning to think Pine Grove had made him and Joyce empty promises. But at least the school bus was running.
Samuel was determined to show his dedication to his task. He managed to squeeze in learning another mechanical point.
He convinced his science teacher to give him some extra work. “David can you help me with this?”
“Sure, actually doing some homework for once?”
“Shut up.” Samuel said without venom.
“How’s it coming?” David asked.
“Learning about circuits.” Samuel replied, “Powerlines are going to be expensive, we’re going to need miles of cables.”
“Let me and Joyce worry about the money.”
David left his brother to his studies. Just in time to meet Gretchen walking by.
“Hello.” She smiled.
“Hi.” He replied. She had to be the one.
“What brings you out here?” He asked, “It’s dangerous after dark.”
“Not with you here.” She smiled.
He heart hammered in his chest, but he took his chance. She kissed back!
Gretchen had to leave. He returned to his telescope. He couldn’t sleep after meeting her. Hopefully she would come by again. He wished more than anything for a phone to call her.
Samuel carefully unwrapped the paper. He left out a sigh of relief, an A. All the extra credit was paying off.
David sighed, it was Friday, but there was still no opening in the paper. Looks like they were going to be camping a little longer than he thought.
He picked up Samuel’s books. There was no use twiddling his thumbs. He could be learning something at least.
Friday evening was spent skilling. Samuel was learning massive amounts about setting up the electricity. His teacher even lent him a new book on capacitors.
The tomatoes were finally starting to ripen.
“I probably should have left this to Amber.” David whispered. They weren’t exactly the best tomatoes.
After a week a study, Samuel finally felt like he mastered the inner workings of electricity and power. Now he just had to figure out how to bring it all together.
After a good night’s sleep. It was time for the next part. Bringing it all together. He used his brother’s telescope to check out the best places to put powerlines.
David had his own surprise as he went to pay this week’s taxes.
“Gretchen! I was hoping you’d come back.”
“Sorry it took so long, I got caught up at work.”
“I wouldn’t stay away. I love it out here.” she smiled, “Especially love it here with you.”
“Well then stay, move in with me and Samuel.”
“You know what, I think I will. Screw being a hostess. I’ll move out here with you.”
Gretchen brought her work table with her. She wanted to be a mad scientist. But she needed a gold robotics badge to qualify in Pine Grove.
Later that evening Gretchen and David got to know each other better in a new tent.
That’s for this chapter. Thank you so much reading. Samuel finished the mechanical skill requirement for electricity. He’s well on the way for meeting the logic requirement. I was hoping he would finish this chapter. But it looks like we’re in the dark for a little longer. Hopefully the Linden family will have better luck with the plumbing and water lines. They’re up next.
