Hey look! I'm still alive!

Wow. I can't believe I haven't posted in so long... life is good. Life is busy. I haven't had time to really sit and contemplate life, so I've been putting more one-sentence check-ins on Facebook instead of logging on to LJ. Please let me know if there's something I need to know - I tried catching up on back-posts, but there are too many.

Right now I'm in Chicago at ALA. For you non-library types, that's the Summer Conference of the American Library Association - I'm pretty sure it's the biggest librarians conference in the world - huge. I get to be here in the place of my old director, yay!

My parents made my day by flying up from San An and spending my "travel recovery day" with me yesterday. We had a blast - spent most of the day at the Field Museum.

Today was spent in an all-day meeting of the Marine Corps Librarians. It was informative and I finally got to meet some of the other librarians in the program. General first impression - seem like a good bunch of people.

Saturday - Monday I get to schedule myself at the conference. There are tons of classes, meetings, author readings, etc., to choose from, plus a gigantic "vendor mall". I will be spending a good amount of time talking to vendors, since I don't have that opportunity in Okinawa, and there are several things we're looking to get that I don't know anything about - like self-service check-out machines.

I am going to play hookie at some point to check out a special exhibit on Harry Potter at the Museum of Science and Technology (I think I can rationalize it as being "work related", don't you?)

The downside to Chicago is that everything is super damned expensive. I really have to watch every penny.

Well, so, that's what's happening with me right now.
