“I’m sorry Mr.Kibum, you just don’t seem right for the job.”
He was disappointed.
Disappointed at himself.
Disappointed for not trying hard enough.

He felt the tears forming at the back of his eyes, but he wouldn’t let them see. He was stronger than that. Smiling, he picked up his bag, collected his resume and walked out.

His friends were waiting outside, wanting to know how it had gone. He couldn’t look them in the eye. Ignoring their curious looks, he walked. He didn’t have the guts to face them. They had all got in and the fact that he hadn’t had hurt his pride.
Once he was outside, the tears began to fall.

He ran.

Ran till his legs felt like lead and his chest felt like it was on fire. He didn’t know where he was going. All he knew was he wanted to get away.
He looked around and found himself in a park. He leaned against the lamppost and tried catching his breath. Wiping away the tears, he picked up his phone and blindly punched in a number.

He wanted to hear his voice. To hear him say that it was going to be alright and it wasn’t the end of the road. He waited, the caller tune was coming to end and just as he was about to hang up -

“Hello” a heavy voice breathed at the other end. Kibum didn’t say anything. He held the phone tightly and cried. He kept crying and didn’t stop.

“Kibum-ah? I assume it didn’t go too well?”

What Kibum said next no one would know…but the voice on the other end, understood.

“So they said you weren’t right for the post and that you would do much better elsewhere and they asked you not to take it personally but, of course you being you, you did. Have I missed out anything?”

Kibum just sighed. At times like this, he was grateful that he had found someone who would understand all his murmurings and incoherent rants.

“Kibum-ah, sit down love. Sit down and listen to me very carefully. You are Kim Kibum. The most brutally honest and most highly talented man that I have ever come across. So what if this company didn’t like you’re designs. They’re looking for a designer who follows orders and does exactly what he is told to. Not someone who is allowed to do what HE wants. I know you’re going to say this was an opportunity and you had to start somewhere, but no. Shut that pretty mouth of yours before a mosquito goes in and listen to me.”

Kibum closed his mouth and smiled.

“You are a creative person love and this job would have tied you down. You need the freedom. You need the space. You’re someone who works with bold colours and out of the ordinary accessories. Being a soccer player, I may not know much about fashion but baby I do raise a few eyes when I walk into clubs or parties dressed in your clothes. And trust me I know when I’m being appreciated for something other than my looks and skills. Don’t roll your eyes at me; I know you were about to-”

Kibum giggled.

“This place wouldn’t have let you be YOU babe. They wouldn’t have let you use your creativity and you and I both know that. So think. Think if this is what you really wanted. Think if you really wanted to work in a place where people would shoot down ideas because you had used shark toothed shoes and jackets full of bling instead of normal boring formal wear and tight fitting suits. You don’t right? I know you don’t. You’re still not crying are you? I can’t hear any muffled noises or whimpers so I’m thinking the waterworks have stopped. Or have you learnt how to say stuff without making noises and that I need to learn how to decipher? I have to go now. Coach is yelling. I’ll see you tonight at 7 kay?”

Kibum facepalmed. Trust his boyfriend of four years to turn a tragic moment into a comic one. He could hear the noise in the background. He had kept his boyfriend from his soccer practice long enough. Assuring his boyfriend that he was all right and now that he thought about it he didn’t really need the job and that he’d be ready for their date, he hung up.

He felt better. This is why he needed the younger boy.

He was his inspiration, his muse, his everything.

He stood up and started walking home. His phone buzzed. Surprised, he answered the call.

“I forgot to tell you something horribly important!”

Kibum frowned. His boyfriend wasn’t one to use his phone once he started practice.

“I love you Kim Kibum”

Kibum blushed. Looking around to make sure no one could see how red he’d turned, he whispered into the phone.

“I love you too Choi Minho”
