Wow, what a busy day!
School Stuff: I had to turn in Project #2 (a Case Review) for my Civil Litigation 2 class, and found out that I got an "A" on Project #1 (two legal briefs). Mr. Cashdollar then gave us time in class to catch up on our assignments, so I spent part of it putting my notes for Project #3 (a Defendant's Trial Brief to the court) onto pleading paper (that 1-28 ruled-and-number paper the courts use). While I was working on that I realized I'd given myself EXTRA work by adding an extra claim by the plaintiff to my trial brief, so I asked Mr. Cashdollar if that was too much. He told me I didn't have to add the extra component, but I could if I wanted to look up the case law to support it... so I might do that just to see how I fair with that. If I decide I can't find the law to support the extra claim, I can always drop it from my final submission to the class.
In my Legal Office Management class, we had a pot-luck, a baby shower for Mrs. Hill and our mid-term exam competition all at the same time. We conducted everything in the Student Lounge, but found that people who WEREN'T in our class were walking up and taking all of our food, so next time, I don't know, we might have it in the classroom again. It would never occur to me to walk up to a display of food that I KNEW had nothing to do with me and just start walking off with stuff; and Mrs. Hill was flabbergasted when she realized what was happening. There's a whole generation of people who have no comprehension of boundaries and personal property, I guess. Good thing I'll be old worn out dirt before they get control of the country... Gad! Anyway, the baby shower was sweet. Zeek, one of the guys in the class, coordinated the funds among the classmates to buy her a top of the line baby stroller (which was delivered to her house yesterday), and other people bought her things like baby clothes, diapers, and stuff. Mrs. Hill said the baby is totally spoiled and she's not even born yet! Hah! Yeah, it’s a girl. They're going to name her after her grandmothers, so her name will be Elizabeth Virginia, (EV) "Evie" for short. Awwww.
When we got to the mid-term competition the class broke up into 4 teams, each team with a buzzer connected to a TV display. When a team "buzzed in", their character on the TV screen would activate and they'd have a chance to answer a legal question. If they got the question right, they got 500 points; if they got it wrong they lost 250 points. Through most of the first part of the competition our stupid buzzer was shut OFF, and we didn't realize it (sabotage!), nevertheless, once we fixed that problem we smoked the other teams! Our team, "The Worms" (for bookworms) got 13,250 points, and the next runner up only got 6750, so the Worms Ruled! Because my team won, we all got 100% on our mid-term exam. Woo-hoo!
EDD Stuff: When I got home from class, I got some more good news. Six checks came from the EDD (they still owe me for 8 weeks, but I'll wait until next week before I start screaming at them again.) Cripes, what a battle! Can I charge the State interest and "damages" for the ridiculous delays?
Here are a few pix:
