Warm and sunny outside today; very nice. This was pretty much a "notes to self" day -- little reminders and stuff like that. Marty's got a possible lead on a job already; I'm so happy for him! (Now, if I could just get something, too, we'd be set for a little while.)
Notes: I got an email from Dena, my Public Defender on the dog issue, that the rest of the Motion to Suppress hearing that was scheduled for Monday the 10th, has been continued to Monday, May 24th. That's, like, the fifth or sixth "continuance" in the case so far, but it's okay with me. It means MY testimony on the Motion to Suppress will be the first (and last) thing the judge hears on that day which may work in my favor, and it gives Dena and I more time to contact any additional witnesses we might want to have there.
I also got an email from the California Student Aid Commission on my application for a Cal Grant to help pay for schooling which said my application was accepted and I may be eligible for the commission's "C" grant. I just had to fill out a very brief on-line form, and then it all goes to the comission for a final decision. "Cal Grant C awards assist with tuition and training costs at occupational or vocational programs. The award includes an amount for books, tools and equipment. If you’re planning to attend a school other than a California Community College, you also may receive a tuition award. Funding is available for up to two years, depending on the length of the program. Supplements are scored based on your work experience, educational history and vocational aptitude." The amount of the grant varies based on need and where you're going to school, and this year thereare only about 7000 grants available.
In other news, the first memorial service for Ms. Areia is going to be on Friday, the 7th, at the Lassila Funeral Chapel, 551 Grass Valley Highway, Auburn, CA 95603 at 1:00 pm, but I won't go to that one. I'll wait and see when/where the one here in Rancho Cordova will be (next Friday, I think). Everyone was doing better today than they were on Monday and Tuesday, but we're still all kind of stunned.
School Stuff: In my Civil Lit 2 class, Mr. Cashdollar did a lecture on pretrial motions and then let us work on part of our Benchmark project for his class. The Benchmark is a giant project each student has to complete, step-by-step, as we go through the course. for this class we're starting out by briefing some cases, and by the end of the quarter we'll have to have a Notice, a Motion for Summary Judgement, a DUF (document of undisputed facts), and exhibits to submit to "the court" (Mr. Cashdollar) on behalf of our "client" (a fictitous prison guard accused of "cruel and unusual punishment"). I really like the way Mr. Cashdollar (who signs his emails to his students with "$") weaves the projects into the in-class lectures... and he is SO interesting to listen to. I'm really enjoying his class.
In my Legal Office Management class we had a test on different legal office management styles and all of the Federal laws regarding employment. I think I aced it. Most of it was information I already knew from working in as an administrative assistant, setting up my own small business, and doing HR work. I was the first one in class to finish the test. Go me! Several of the students in that class have been asking me for help, and kind of looking up to me, which makes me feel like I'm not only learning in the class, I'm also "contributing", and I really like that.
My classmate Rebecca "Duct Tape", was in class today, and said she'd been talking to "Dr. Mac" about rearranging her school schedule. She told me she dropped Mr. Cashdollar's class because she felt she was getting too far behind in the work, and I told her I'd help her with it if she'd stay in the class. I then told her that I had dropped by Algebra class (and will take it on-line next quarter), and she ran out of the classroom back to Dr. Mac, and told him she wanted to go back into Mr. Cashdollar's class and get out of the Algebra class instead. Dr. Mac asked her why, and she said something like, "Because that's what Mary's doing, and I can't survive in Alegbra class without her!" Hah! She cracks me up. That's Rebecca in the photo, by the way, doing the tango with the Medical class's skeleton.
After school I came home -- to a house that smelled of fresh brewed flavored coffee! Yummy! Thank you, Marty! -- and made us a linner of homemade Frenchfries and hot dogs. I get my EBT (food stamps) money tomorrow, and will go shopping then for some real food. Marty suggested that I stop buying food that we really like because we eat it all before the month is over; hah! Okay, how about octopus with extra tentacles?
