Home Front: You've probably already heard that Marty was laid off from his temp-job, so now we're BOTH job-hunting. I have resources through school (like access to printers and fax machines, etc.) that I may be able to lend him to help with his search. I'm not really too worried about us at this point. We still have options, and have skills and brains, so we're not "done in" yet. I'm sending out 10 more resumes tomorrow...
School Stuff: I got a call today around 10:30 from Ms. Mills (my former Civil Litigation teacher) and she started talking to me about her schedule today and then asked if I was going to the staff meeting today. I said, uh, Ms Mills this is "Mary Hanson", your former STUDENT, so, no I won't be going to the staff meeting. She apologized (she was trying to get hold of another teacher named "Mary, obviously), and we kind of laughed about that, then she asked if I'd heard about Miss Ariea, the paralegal program manager at Heald College, and I said no... Well, Miss Ariea died over the weekend. She was out for a long vacation -- and was apparently have some mental difficulties. Over the weekend, she got into an armed "standoff" situation with police officers and ended up shooting herself! What a shock! I really liked Miss Areia; she was a former cop (served with the Sacramento Police Depart from 1994 to 2003), was very knowledgable in the law, and had been wonderfully helpful to me for the past several quarters at Heald, adjusting my schedule when I needed it, writing me letters of reference, etc. It was kind of "providence", then, that Ms. Mills accidentally called me; it gave me a heads-up about what was happening at school so I didn't walk in there "blind" tomorrow.
According to news reports: NATOMAS - A former Sacramento Police officer is dead after commiting suicide; possibly over a failed relationship. Jeanette Areia, 38, is believed to have killed herself with a single gun shot to the head after a 12 hour standoff with police.
Areia lived in a nice Natomas neighborhood with her girl friend for almost 2 years; both are law school students . "It had its good times and it had its bad times," But the relationship was volitale according to Sara and LouAnn Pitzler-Swenson; they live across the street, "We saw her partner moving out with her stuff yesterday around 4 or 5. But that happened once before too."
But others tell us police were called here often; maybe as many as six times in the past 18 months. In fact, Areia was arrested and jailed on domestic violence charges about 24 hours before her death. "Friends had contacted her later in the evening yesterday (Friday) and they were getting the indication she might harm herself. She was armed with a gun and that's when we began our portion of this," says Sacramento Police Sergeant Norm Leong.
The 38 year old woman was forced to leave the Sacramento Police Department in 2003, because of a back injury, after 9 years on the job. Since then she started a process serving business and began law school. A spokesman for the police department wouldn't tell us much, but there are unconfirmed reports Areia had several guns inside the home.
Early Saturday morning police heard gunfire inside the home; and SWAT teams used a robot to knockdown the door. A camera on that robot revealed the ex-cop inside.
Jeanette Ariea was pronounced dead at the UC Davis Medical Center at 8:57 Saturday night.
God. You never know what people are going through...
Good Reviews: on a MUCH lighter note, my Trek fanfiction story has been getting a lot of niced reviews form readers. I have a small "following" of about 1200 to 1300 regular reader/fans now. Here are snippets from some of the most recent reviews/comments:
Elain451: "Fabulous chapter, as always. Your attention to detail is brilliant and your Vulcan translation are superb, did you take a Vulcan language class? LOL! It really lends a great quality to a brilliant plotline. One can feel Nyota's tension at being separated from Spock by Sa'aat's closeness to her lover. But you've made it all so real, from Spock's seizure to everyone's reaction. And Spock's protecting Nyota from it, it had to irk Sa'aat, even though he knows Spock loves Nyota. Anyhoo, all in all...fantastic! Can't wait for an update!"
Botsey: "Masterful on all levels. Your 'footnotes' are so well researched and clear and your Vulcan translations are on the mark. At this point I am not only concerned for Spock, I am also anxious for Sa'aat. As he is repairing and removing, where is the receptacle for these discarded things. Is it his own mind? If this is the case, and maybe Vulcan healers have the capacity to wall off this garbage, is there anywhere that it can be deposited. Very pleased with Sarek's acceptance of Nyota, a happy ending in that area. Your side story just sort of solidifies that old saying, "Don't fool with mother nature.' Even if there is a few viable offspring, will they be normal? Again, my above quote. Thank you for keeping us so concerned about these fictional persons that we laugh and cry with and for them."
Moongazer: "This story is just WOW! The emotional content is riveting. I really felt for Spock as he was given the truth in chapter 12. I don't mind saying that it teared me up a bit. And Nyota's reaction to watching him go through so much pain was a great way to usher out the chapter. Sa'aat was great in the chapter as well. I agreed with him on telling Spock the whole truth no matter how disruptive it may be, and his slight trepidation when it was time to do so. Very well done! "
M'Celeste: "And here I thought it would all be uphill after chapter 12! What really gets to me about this story is the feeling of not knowing. I don't know what future awaits Spock. Will he be whole again? What will happen to Spock and Nyota as lovers? (I still don't get a sense of inevitability on that score.) What will become of Sa'aat - or for that matter, any of the other memorable OCs you've made us care so deeply about? (Even Pashu, for heaven's sake!) I have absolutely no clue. And it's just that unsettling unpredictability that makes this story so fresh and downright addictive. That and compelling psychological drama, multi-dimensional characterizations, scientific elements that read as well researched and plausible... I could go on. Bring on the next chapter!"
Yay! They like me, they really like me! Hah!
