The Great Untitled Prompt Project
drake & josh. drake/josh. 1331 words. pg-13

It was their first taste of freedom and Josh sat back as he let his new step-brother guide the way.

notes;
This originally spawned off from a fic I wrote called Essence. During a marathon aim convo with marleybanana, we decided to continue on the tradition of writing prompts for D&J. We each wrote out 25 prompts; so be sure to check hers out over here because they are pretty fabulous.

--

1). Lotion
The clean, unscented cream slides over his palms, erases the roughness of his knuckles, and disappears under pale skin. Josh makes sure to rub it all away, to wipe away the slightly greasy feeling it can sometimes leave. He looks up and sees Drake watching his hands with his eyes opened a little wider than usual.

The bottle dropped with a dull thud to the carpeted floor when Drake pounced.

2). Yellow
Bright fabric glowed like the sun against warm, freckled skin. It hugged all the right places on Drake’s lithe torso and in Josh’s excitement he’d accidentally ripped the collar a bit.

3). Disney
“Hudgens!”

“Tisdale!”

“Hudgens!”

“Tisdale!”

4). Cell phone
“Ill c u at mall at 4, k” Deleted.

“Band prac tues scottys house. U in?” Replied.

“Mr. Puff Puff misses u and so do I.” Saved.

He prayed no one would ever go through his inbox until long after his body was cold and buried.

5). Syrup
Josh might grumble and groan about having to wait hand and foot on Drake after the dune buggy accident, but there must’ve been a kernel of sympathy somewhere in that boy. His third day laid up in his loft, Josh delivered his ailing step-brother special homemade French toast.

Yeah, being grounded was baaaaad.

6). Whore
He was so frustrated with everything, everything. And he knew it was wrong to accept that shot from Trevor, but it was even more wrong to down the potent six after that. That night, Drake learned he was drunkenly liberal with his feelings and his burning need to share his thoughts with everybody. Unfortunately, Mindy happened to be first in his line of fire.

It was the first and last time Josh ever gave him a black eye.

7). Swear
They didn’t use that kind of language normally. There were the occasional hells and maybe a few damns every once in awhile, but Josh could never consider himself or Drake to be a potty mouth.

That is, until they were alone with the doors locked and the terrible words flew out of their mouths like dirty prayers against sweaty skin.

8). Shin
He loved mornings like this, when they woke up tangled in each other. It pained him to climb down the ladder and collapse into his own bed with nothing to grab on to except Mr. Puff-Puff and cold blankets.

9). Magic marker
“I’m re-staching you.”

It happened so quickly that Josh didn’t know if he was light headed from the pungent ink fumes or by the way Drake’s calloused fingertips grazed and gripped at his jaw line.

10). Fair
Drake’s pajama covered legs were stretched over Josh’s as his back lay still on the couch. He clutched the sides of his stomach and let out a few groans for effect. All Josh could do was roll his eyes and give his step-brother a knowing smile.

“I told you three cones of cotton candy would be enough, but noooo. You had to eat the fourth one and then ride the Tilt-a-Whirl.”

“If you’re going to sit here and lecture me, at least you could pass me the Tums.”

11). Diary
It contains the words he can’t say, won’t say. And not for lack of trying, but fear always gets the better of him. Blood pounding, paralyzing fear of the consequence his words could cause. He scrawls them out on notebook paper instead and whispers them in a dream.

12). Whipped cream
“I swear, I just bought a can of whipped cream the other day. Boys, you saw it in here, right?”

13). Keyboard
With one palm in Drake’s hair and the other trying to grab for support on the sturdy desk, Josh was very grateful that his word processing program came with an auto save feature.

14). Xerox machine
“C’mon Josh, it’s the last day of high school forever. Don’t you think Mrs. Hafer deserves a little goodbye present?”

“I don’t see why it has to involve us taking our pants off.”

“You act like you’ve never done this before.”

“Excuse me Drake, but I’ll have you know that my butt has never once touched a single machine in here.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

15). Seventeen
It was the number of kisses he received, scattered throughout the day. Plus one, because of the fiasco Drake caused last year. All in all, being one year closer to adulthood turned out not to be so bad.

16). Comedian
They sit in the back of the dark comedy club, watching some kid named Elijah LePouf spit out joke after joke. He watches Josh laugh from time to time and slips his hand into his under the table, out of sight.

17). Princess
She was haughty, ill-tempered, and prissy in his opinion. Sometimes, he didn’t care if Mindy made Josh happy or not. It just a burned a hole inside him that he had the means to bring her down a few pegs; pride, self-respect, and Josh’s wishes forbid him to do so.

18). Wind
It tore through their hair as Drake sat behind the wheel, steering the dune buggy on the narrow path near the cabin their parents had rented. It was their first taste of freedom and Josh sat back as he let his new step-brother guide the way.

19). Glasses
They make him look and feel smarter. As though some plastic frames and clear glass could actually raise his IQ points. Drake looks over the blank homework sheet and sighs as he slides a look over to Josh in the next seat over.

He should be the one wearing the glasses. It’s a fleeting, selfish thought that pulls another sigh out of him as he begins to put down what is probably the wrong answer anyway.

20). Gun
Drake carefully spread the hot glue over the ripped pieces of the foam finger. In doing so, he brought the separate parts together and made it whole. He hoped that it would be enough to fix the bigger things he’d ripped apart in his life.

21). Baseball hat
Drake had a thing for playing music, letting it blast from the radio when the two of them were alone in the bedroom and everybody else was out for the day. Normally, he picked what they listened to, but he entered the room and saw Josh fiddling with the dials on the CD player. An old song began to pour out through the speakers; Drake laughed when he recognized the beat as he adjusted the curved brim of his stiff, black baseball cap.

“You can leave your hat on…”

22). Skirt
Drake made the catcalls and the appropriate noises to the girls in the lunchroom as they walked by, giggling in appreciation of his attention. Josh smiled too; only because they didn’t know what went on in the janitor’s closet between the time lunch was over and fourth period was about to begin.

23). Scent
Jasmine and honeysuckle. Cucumber melon. Orange blossoms. As Drake left each of these girls, their perfumes clung and seeped desperately into the fabric of his clothing, leaving him feeling satisfied and uncomfortable all at once.

He felt right again seeing Josh bring up their basket of freshly laundered clothes, as though Josh adding fabric softener had added a balance to his life.

24). Sweet
His love for candy was like an addiction that he just couldn’t get over. Josh knew he should’ve helped him break his unhealthy ways, but instead he further enabled the habit. It was greedy of him, but candy just tasted better second hand when he was licking it off Drake’s lips.

25). Treehouse
It was an escape, a little hideaway from the rest of the world. The two of them spent energy, spilt blood, and gave up time to build the structure for the kid next door. It was only fair that they got to use it too.

Besides, what Robbie didn’t know wasn’t going to hurt him.
