Chapter One
As a renowned photographer throughout Japan, Kato Shigeaki had worked in many places with many people. Most people were nice, friendly, welcoming, yet others…other seemingly had a knack of always irritating him.
His newest project was to photograph ads for a new clothing line called “code” which the popular model Nishikido Ryo had started. Shige really had no problem with this; he liked photographing for clothing lines because they normally were really fun and paid well.
However, Shige wondered if it was too late to switch over and take the offer over at the less paying company. At least then he wouldn’t have to deal with-
“God, why are you so incompetent? I look positively atrocious in all of these shots! Are you sure you’re a qualified photographer? How did you ever pass art school?”
Shige groaned loudly and hung his head. He’d worked with a few prima donnas in his career, but none of them were as insufferable as Nishikido Ryo.
“Hey! Are you listening to me?” Ryo shouted, glaring at the slightly inanimate looking Shige who was slouched upon a chair. When Shige didn’t respond, Ryo grabbed a few photos and marched over to him, thrusting the pictures in his face.
“What are those? I look ugly! Are you trying to make me look bad on purpose? You better fix these now!”
“Nishikido-san, have you ever been to art school? Have you ever done photography?” Shige asked wearily. “For someone who hasn’t even gone to college, you sure have a lot to say about my profession.”
Ryo drew back in surprise before glowering furiously. He threw the photos onto the floor and exclaimed dramatically, “That’s it! I’m taking a break!”
“You just had one!” Shige called exasperatedly after Ryo who stomped off the set, his assistant hustling behind him.
Shige let out a long sigh and ran a hand through his short hair. He picked up the photos Ryo had dropped on the ground and looked through them. Admittedly, they weren’t his best, but Ryo didn’t look that horrible. Shige thought it was quite impossible to make Ryo look ugly, though he’d never say it to the model’s face. These photos were just good enough to use and were exactly what Ryo’s manager had asked for. Ryo, however, was too picky, too egotistical, and each shot had to be perfect according to his standards, or they would have to do the entire shoot over again.
Shige gave a startled jump when his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, smiling when he saw the caller ID and answered, “Hey.”
The cheerful voice of his boyfriend immediately calmed Shige and he leaned against the chair and listened. “Shige! I’m glad I got a hold of you!”
“What’s up, Kei?” Shige asked.
“You’ll never guess what I got.”
“What?” Shige laughed, amused by the excitement in Koyama’s voice.
“Tickets to see-”
“No,” Shige interrupted quickly.
“But-”
“No!”
“You didn’t even let me finish!” Koyama whined and Shige could practically feel the pout and puppy-dog eyes working full time.
“You don’t have to, Kei, because I already know what you’re going to say.”
“But I want to say it!” Koyama continued whining.
“Kei, I don’t care that you got concert tickets to see Yama-Tomo-whatever his name is.”
“Yamashita Tomohisa!” Koyama exclaimed, sounding scandalized his boyfriend didn’t know the name of the popular artist. “Isn’t it absolutely amazing? I’ve wanted to go to a concert forever, and it’s usually so hard to get tickets, but I was listening to the radio this morning and they had those ‘call now to get tickets’ things and I called, but I didn’t think I’d get through, but I did, and I won, Shige!”
Shige was slightly impressed by how Koyama managed to say that all in one breath, but just rolled his eyes and replied, “Calm down, Kei.”
“I can’t! It’s too exciting!” Koyama said. “We’re going to go, right? You’ll go with me, right?”
“Not a chance.”
“What? Nooo, you have to come with me!”
“But I don’t even like him.”
“So? You’re my boyfriend, therefore you should go with me!”
Shige rubbed his temples with his free hand, feeling a headache coming on. “When is it?” he asked as he got to his feet and headed for the table with the rest of the photos laid out on it.
“This Friday. Please, won’t you go with me?”
Shige sighed explosively. “Fine,” he said grudgingly. “I’ll go. Be thankful I don’t have to work Friday night.”
“Yay!” Koyama cheered.
“You’d better pay me back for this, you know,” Shige said.
Koyama smirked and replied, “Oh, don’t worry, I have just the perfect way to do that.”
“I’m sure you do,” Shige said with a grin.
“When will you be home tonight?”
“Probably not until late. This model-I really want to shoot him.”
Koyama sighed. “You keep coming home so late these days.”
“I know, I’m sorry, really. I’ll try to get back early tonight, okay?”
“All right, I’ll see you then,” Koyama said. “I love you.”
“Love you too, later,” Shige said before hanging up and putting his phone away.
“Who were you talking to?”
Shige jumped slightly and turned to find Ryo standing before him, arms crossed over his chest and a glare across his face (which Shige was sure was permanently etched there whenever he looked at him).
“None of your business,” Shige replied offhandedly as he grabbed his camera. “Now, are you done being a drama queen or do you need a few more minutes?”
Ryo’s glare intensified and he replied, “You’re being paid here to do this, you shouldn’t waste time speaking to your boyfriend on the phone.”
“If you knew I was talking to my boyfriend, why did you ask?” Shige questioned.
“Had to make sure,” Ryo replied, though Shige got the feeling that wasn’t the only reason.
Shige shrugged and said, “Well, are you ready to start the shoot, or do you need more makeup to cover those bags under your eyes first?”
“What bags?!” Ryo shouted running towards the closest mirror and staring with horror at his face.
Shige laughed out loud when Ryo realized there really weren’t any bags under his eyes and Shige had only been joking. The model turned and gave the most menacing glare he could manage which just made Shige laugh harder as the shutter on his camera went off.
“Now, that will be a really good picture,” Shige said brightly. “We should use that for the ads. It’ll show the world how much of an asshole you are.”
Ryo clenched his fists angrily, about three seconds away from punching the photographer’s face in. He willed himself to calm down, he was sure that punching, no matter how satisfying it would be, wouldn’t result in anything good. He crossed his arms over his chest and replied, “Oh, please, they don’t care if I’m an asshole or not as long as I’m gorgeous.”
Shige rolled his eyes. “You amaze me with your modesty.”
Ryo grinned. “Why, thank you.”
“Now get on the set, okay? I want to get out of here early tonight.”
“Aww, going to spend precious time with your boyfriend?”
“Probably better than the lonely night you’ll be spending.”
Ryo frowned and Shige’s camera snapped another shot.
“Ooh, another lovely picture,” he said, grinning. “You should do some more, we’ll be done really early that way!”
“I’m going to hurt you,” Ryo threatened furiously. This--This irritating, incompetent photographer was getting the better of him? Ryo wouldn’t allow it.
“And that would be the, what? Eighth photographer to quit on you in the last month? Not very promising, is it?” Shige replied, unfazed.
Ryo let a noise akin to a growl escape his lips and Shige smirked.
“Now why don’t you be a good underfed model and pose on that chair for me?”
“I’m not underfed!” Ryo shouted.
Shige just waved his hand in the direction of the set and Ryo glared at him once before stalking over and sitting down on the white chair. Shige brought the camera up to his face, peering through the eyehole at the model before him, who’s entire demeanor seemed to have changed once the real work begun. Ryo leaned casually against the back of the chair, his legs crossed before him and a soft smile on his lips. Shige zoomed in on that smile, the smile which he felt suited Ryo more than his normal scowl. If only he smiled like this more, Shige thought, it wouldn’t be as bad working with him.
Shige felt himself smile as well as he let the shutter on the camera click shut.
