One of my good friends passed last week. His name was Gordon. He died while out at breakfast with one of his friends. Told him he should probably call the ambulance, but it was too late. He was gone before the medics got there.
He was 79 years old and he smoked and drank despite his doctor's warnings that his pacemaker couldn't take it. Gordon didn't care. He used to always answer my "What's new?" with a "Honey, when you're this old ain't nothin new goin on." He was just ready to go I guess. Wanted to live the remainder of his life how he felt like living it. Can't really blame him I suppose.... how would you deal with knowing you only have a couple of good years left in you? I guess you can just celebrate the life that was Gordon.
He always was my favorite regular at Applebee's. Every time I would go over to greet him he would give me a big smile and a big hug and let me know how beautiful I was. Always asked about Isaac and fondly called him his "nephew" even though he was old enough to be my grandfather. He told me once "I'm gonna give him his first drink when he's 12! I think I can make it til the kid is 12.."
Gordon also made sure he always let me know that I was his favorite sister. You see... Mona is a type of celebrity in Livermore. Everybody LOVES her and when they find out I'm her sister, I'm automatically loved too. Its nice, but it also means I'm loved for being her little sister rather than loved for being Emma. I don't know if Gordon picked up on that and consciously said it to make me feel better, or if I really was his favorite sister haha. Whatever it is, I appreciated it. I still do.
I miss you Gordon. Thank you for gracing my life with your smile and spirit.
