For our 15th Anniversary as well, we’d like to express our gratitude!
ARASHI next issue next year preview
S Of course I’d like to grow and change next year; that included, it’s important to treasure our way of doing it “as usual”. I’d like to go on walking in the same pace as we did so far.
N For our 15th anniversary, rather than doing some half-assed celebration, I think how we’re going to pass the next 5 years from now is more important. I’d like to keep on treasuring the work I have in front of me.
M For group work as well as individual ones, while trying to introduce more new things, I intent to return and continue with Arashi’s group activities!
O Personally, on our 10th anniversary, I have resolved myself that Arashi’s goal still lies ahead in future. Next year as well, rather than chasing the cloud, I’ll just face what comes with all my power.
A 15th anniversary, we haven’t even reached the halfway yet, right. But I think it’s alright if we can wholeheartedly express our gratitude to those who have been supporting us this way.
“Editorial” note by Arashi for Arashi
Five guys who just finished making the first 「Arashi Magazine」.
They look back on this year and talk about what’s to come next year!
S: Though this was our first time trying to make such thing as 「Arashi Magazine」, but we had fun right?
A: It was so much fun!
N: J had to change clothes several times, the shoot must be hard for you, right?
M: Not at all. It was very interesting.
N: The page where Sho-kun became the interviewer is also very unique, but actually there are a lot of times when Sho-kun acts as the host for Arashi cross talk like that.
A: You can say that’s one of Arashi cross talk regular happenings! (laugh)
N: The staff would say, “Sakurai-san, this theme today please,” and asked him to host the interview like it was just normal, right? (laugh)
M: I think it’s also fine to add the credit “Coverage by Sakurai”, don’t you think? (laugh)
S: How has it come to this? Perhaps there are things that I only can ask because I’m also a member? But if we’re talking about 「Arashi cross talk happenings」then things like “one last word from Leader” has also became a custom.
A: Right, right. Even though we have finished the talk with a proper closing, it’s like we still want one last line from Leader. (laugh)
O: Indeed, there was a time when I had to do that every time, eh.
N: Leader, in the past, even for a group talk, you used to never say a word, right?
O: Right. Because they usually asked me last, so I didn’t know what to say anymore. (laugh)
S: I will say this now because it doesn’t matter anymore, but when we debuted there was this talk when Ohno-san didn’t say a word at all. The editor was troubled, so he asked me, “Is it alright to take one part of your comments and write them as Ohno-san’s words?” (laugh) But it looked like they didn’t do it in the end.
M: Did Ohno-san know about this?
O: Nope. (laugh) Ah, by the way, lately I have been reading everyone’s solo interviews. But only when I find the word “Ohno” or “Leader” in the heading.
M: So that’s how you decide. (laugh)
O: Fufu… I wonder if “Ohno” is written and look for it, if I find it then I’d read. Then, I’d be like, thank you for saying things about me. (laugh)
N: That must be the only part you read, right.
M: As for me, I will read everybody’s interview if I have the chance. Some time ago, when I had magazine coverage for my movie promotion, it just happened that there were a lot of magazines with Sho-kun’s “Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de” articles, so I read them.
S: When I did the magazine coverage for that, there were a lot of Nino’s “Platina Data” articles. I tried reading it and it turned out to be very interesting. What he talks about in Arashi cross talk and in his personal interviews are totally different. For Arashi cross talk, Nino takes the wisecracker role, but for his column series in More Magazine, he talks about things like his view of work, so that feels unique. We rarely talk about work with members so when I read it in solo interview, I was like “heee…”
A: But it’s a little embarrassing though!
From the talk about interviews, we got to hear members’ real opinion about magazines. Now, please talk about Arashi topics of this year!
S: By the time this magazine comes out, there’s only 2 months left of the year.
N: Time flies so fast this year, don’t you think.
All: So fast~!
S: The most memorable thing this year, what could it be, I wonder.
A: There were a lot of things, but for me maybe it was the “24 hour TV” we had recently.
S: That was our 4th time doing it, and the 2nd time in a row.
A: Right. The themes and challenges were different each time, but the emotion was always overwhelming. Everyone went at it with full power, it made me realize once again how lucky I was to be in the middle of Budokan to see it all.
N: Aiba-kun, he suddenly said a wonderful thing, eh (laugh). But I also felt the same.
A: See! You’d certainly feel that way, right? When you felt how everyone was giving it their best, you got choked up inside!!
N: For this year’s “24 hour TV”, I didn’t do a support project, so I was able to watch all the challenges objectively. It was really touching. For example, the tap dance with hearing impaired children which J was in charge of. It made me cry.
A: Besides the people who did the challenges, seeing the tears from their parents made you want to cry even more, right?
S: Certainly! It was a precious time this year as well, right.
N: What about J’s memory of this year?
M: It isn’t a memory with all members, but I think it’d be the trip to London with Leader, as the continuation of New York trip with Leader and Aiba-kun last year.
S: How did you spend your time there?
M: We watched performances and visited museums, it was all very interesting. Leader was also drawing for “24 hour TV” T-shirts, right?
O: Yes, I did the drawing in the hotel.
M: It made me realize once again how pleasant it was to spend some time in another country. We have a tour in the latter half of this year, so it feels like this overseas trip gave me the energy. Ohno-san as well, from now on you will be thinking about the choreography, right?
O: Well, I won’t force myself to. If there are songs which make me feel like doing so, then I’ll do it (laugh).
A: By the way, we also got souvenirs from London and Paris, right? Both of them gave me T-shirts, but it was interesting how different those were. Matsujun gave me a brand name T-shirt, while Leader gave me an artsy one.
S: Ah, I also got T-shirts (laugh).
M: I bought it from a T-shirt specialist shop in London. For Aiba-kun, it was a T-shirt from the brand that he said he liked when we went to New York together. For Sho-kun, it was a red checked T-shirts…
S: Because I always wear a red checked stuffs (laugh).
N: He was watching you properly, right.
M: Come to think of it, I’m sorry that Nino’s souvenirs were the only ones that were not T-shirts. ….I heard your radio talk.
N: Eh?
M: When I went to a famous select shop in Paris, I found USB flash disk with Nino’s favorite character. I thought you’d be happy to have it so I bought it for you…. But I heard from someone that you were making a claim about it on radio, saying “It’s only me who got these?”
S: Waa, he found out (laugh).
N: No, no, no! (laugh) I’ve forgotten what I said exactly on the radio, but I was really happy to get that character USB, you know! However, I got another USB which character I don’t really care about, right? I was wondering why. But J is such a serious person, so maybe he bought it so that the price of my souvenir would be roughly the same with everybody else’s. Maybe my USB was cheaper, that’s why he added one more, that’s what I said on the radio (laugh).
A: I see, he did it to balance the account.
N: I said such consideration is very J-like, … I was saying a good story.
M: So it was like that (laugh).
S: You wouldn’t know if you only heard one part of it, eh. (laugh)
A: It’s good that we’ve managed to resolve this misunderstanding.
S: Right. But you know what, even though this year Arashi has been trusted to challenge some new things, we’re also given chance to continue with such things as regular shows, “24 hour TV”, “Waku Waku Gakkou”. Having the experience to do both, once again it made me realize how happy it feels to be able to do so.
A: We might get more experience, but we just can’t get used to it, eh?
S: Right. But at least we lost that unnecessary crazy nerve we had the first time. No matter what work it is, I want to do it with a new feeling every time.
A: Yes, I also feel pretty much that way.
M: For the concert that will start from now as well, I want to do it with such feeling. We did hear things like “the Popcorn tour last year was excellent”, but regardless of that, we’d like to do it with a “start from scratch” spirit. I think it is fine even if doing so results in some similar parts or going in the same direction as previous concerts. I can’t help but think that if we rely on the best of ourselves who are concentrating in the “now”, naturally we’ll be able to produce something different from before, something more interesting.
O, S, N, A: Yes, yes (nodding their heads)
S: Next year we finally come to our 15th anniversary, but maybe we will go on just like we have been so far, without changing anything.
N: Yes. This might be the foundation of Arashi. Doing things like usual, without getting too worked up.
A: Also, it’ll be good if we can express our gratitude to the people who have been supporting us in a lot of different ways.
S: Then, Leader. As promised, the last word please. (laugh)
O: Let, let’s do our best as well next year. (laugh)
Finally I finished translating the Arashi Magazine section from this magazine. It's been a while since I translated anything. My English was so rusty I had to spend weeks working on just this one piece. If there are any grammar nazis here, please come forward and give me a hand. I'm planning to translate a Sho article next, to commemorate (belated) Sho month.
